A bold historical romance set on the wild and woolly shores of Yorkshire, full of nefarious characters and dark devious deeds. A Riding Officer, forced into a job he hates, futilely attempting to prevent smuggling along the coast, falls in love with Anna, the local barmaid. They are the only two beautiful, honest people in a village populated by malodourous scoundrels, the worst of whom is Lockwood, betrothed to Anna. Lockwood and his cronies hatch various malign schemes to despatch the dashing Riding Officer (often while they sit around a roaring fire, burning books of poetry, drinking brandy and toasting their own evil). The action is fast-paced and rich in historical detail, spanning the country and involving smugglers, highwaymen, murder, daredevils, conspiracies, food poisoning by dubious fish, and, of course, true love. ~ Rakie , Amazon Review
