The fact that the author of this fascinating and very funny book is the great-nephew of the near-legendary collector of all things strange and anomalous, Charles Fort, should give a strong hint of what it is likely to contain. A further hint comes from the subtitle that says, ‘How I Lost my Mind, Was Dyed Blue and Accidently Learned to Smuggle Weapons’. In essence it is a travel book with a major difference and the difference is that the author, Pat Spain, who is a presenter on wildlife shows such as the Travel Channel’s ‘Legend Hunter’ and National Geographic’s ‘Beast Hunter’ is also a very funny writer and he sets out his adventures with a strong streak of laugh-out-loud humour. I suppose, given the jams he and his film crew get into, he would have to have sense of the ridiculous. One of these involve ‘bullet ants’ and his director tells him that, "This is the scene everyone will remember," as he prepares to take part in a bullet-ant ceremony moment, and he does remember, oh yes, he really does. He also makes it very clear that being a presenter on a TV series is far from a bed-of-roses and the fact that he is often reporting for from civilisation, where conditions are, to say the least, ‘primitive. In other words, despite seeming to be a glamorous occupation, it can be far from it. This is just one in series of similar books that Spain has written (all are very funny) but their purpose is the highlight the existence of ‘cryptids’, of creatures like the Sasquatch and other assorted creatures that have been rumored for centuries to exist alongside humans in far-flung locations dotted around the world. No spoilers here, so you will have to read the book to see if actually manages to find a bulletproof Ground Sloth, but the task will be rewarded with loads of belly-laughs along the way.
