whymaterialismbaloneyWant to write a non-fiction book?

Then it’s vital to be a reader! Every non-fiction genre has its conventions. What it takes to write an attention grabbing history book is not what it takes to write a great book on self-help. The more you know about the area you want to write in, the better. Find out if you really are breaking new ground. Find out who the leaders in your field are, and see what they say, and how they say it. Not to copy them, but to have an idea of where your own work is going to fit in.

With the internet at your fingertips, it’s very easy to see who is working in your areas of interest, and to get copies of their books. Sometimes this means finding that your brilliant idea wasn’t so new and exciting after all. But, better that than spending a year writing a book only to find out when you try to send it to publishers that the subject has been done to death already.
