We have lots of great new and recently published fiction across our imprints Roundfire Books, Cosmic Egg Books, Top Hat Books and Perfect Edge.

Our authors have been keeping busy with events, interviews and awards.

Author Guy Weishaar's first fiction book Dark of the Center Line, uses the area of Central Illinois as the backdrop for the murder mystery. He discusses this in a Herald & Revue article.

And Cultured Vultures report in their recent review of the book, "My advice: read this book, and then read it again and again. Read between the lines; read beyond the lines - there's a lot to be learned from a text as perceptive as this. Don't miss it."

ROUNDFIRE

Burden, The
A Family Saga

by N.E. David

Frank is a reformed alcoholic. He lives at home with his mother, Elisabeth – at least, he did until she went into a nursing home suffering from dementia. He is devoted to her and conversely hates his estranged father, Geoffrey. So when elder sister Pat calls to tell him Dad is dying and wants to meet him, Frank is forced to face up to his demons. But what are they? And how did he acquire them? Every family has its secrets and Frank's is no exception. As much as he tries to forget, something happened a long time ago that has coloured his life ever since - and he can't live in peace until he confronts it. Seen from the perspective of four separate family members, The Burden examines an individual's contrasting relationships and the different emotions they inspire.

THE BURDEN is my second novel. It’s completely unlike the first except that as with Michael Blake in BIRDS OF THE NILE, it attempts to portray a character. Frank Johnson is, I suspect, not a particularly likeable person, although I like to think he has at least one redeeming feature in the love he bears his mother. To find out why this is so, we must visit three members of his close family and hear their stories as well as his own. Hopefully we will then understand what formed him and why he turned out as he did. I’ve always known that my father abandoned my mother and that I spent part of my early childhood living in a caravan. More recently I was shocked to discover it was for a period of four years. So did Frank. He became an alcoholic. Fortunately, I did not. There, but for the Grace of God, go us all. ~ N.E.David (An Introduction From The Author )

by Jac Simensen

Appalled with US policy in the Middle-East,a billionaire defense contractor and a retired major general decide to mount their own Executive Action in the region. They build a small dirty bomb, and brutally brainwash a simple, garbage-truck driver, whose wife was mistakenly killed by terrorists, into exploding the device in the Grand Mosque in Mecca during the Hajj, with the intention of sparking a war between Shia and Sunni nations. As the time ticks away, can anybody stop them... Hugely pertinent and thoughtful, Executive Action asks about the world we live in and questions who really is pulling the strings on the global stage.

Jac Simensen is an American, but has spent most of his adult life in the UK, Asia, Europe and the Middle-East, where he has worked with technology and intelligence corporations and agencies. High in the Streets

by Matthew Binder

One day Lou Brown decided to kill himself. But when he sat down to craft a suicide letter, the simple act of committing words to the page was like opening up a window to his mind, allowing the whole world to shine. His book went on to become a runaway bestseller, making him a literary icon, earning him all the trappings of the American Dream. It’s now five years later and the obligations that come along with great success have robbed him of the freedom he values above all else. When Lou suspects his fiancé of an infidelity, he moves into the Frontier Motel, setting himself up for a week-long adventure where he’ll once again learn to buck convention, indulge in his honest appetites, and follow his uninhibited instincts.

High in the Streets is by turns hilarious, moving, and raw. A gritty tour de force that takes the best aspects of James Salter, Norman Mailer, and Bret Easton Ellis to heart, Binder's novel is an accomplished debut by a writer with a singular, animated voice, attuned to the strange rhythms and desperation of latter-day Los Angeles and the people who live there. ~ Michael Abolafia, New York Review BooksMatthew Binder is a former wastrel of the highest order. His work has drawn comparisons to Bret Easton Ellis, Norman Mailer, and James Salter. COSMIC EGG BOOKS

The Art and Science of Intergalactic Warmongery

by Field Marshal S. Myrston

As a young cadet, Private Myrston led troops against the Victoriana rebellion where he earned a reputation as a fearless soldier and cunning tactician. His meteoric rise to Emperor of the Molagrian Empire was paved with sound battle strategies, a winning smile and clever assassinations of several superior officers. As emperor, he sought out and engaged in countless conflicts with a multitude of sentient lifeforms during his reign. It was during this period that he mastered several forms of invasion, administration and religious manipulation for profit. In this text, Myrston has plagiarized wildly from Molagrian and Nebraxian classic texts infinitely better than this one to provide a concise set of tenets guaranteeing intergalactic success. Learn how to take control of the planet, establish a government that suits your needs and then seek out and annihilate exotic, intelligent lifeforms throughout the galaxy.

Myrston, a recent immigrant to Earth, has taken human form and now consults for several despots where his skills in planning and executing invasions has helped them in some of their more recent endeavors. In his spare time he enjoys reading human military history, brewing and drinking coffee and rutting with cheap prostitutes. He is the author of the highly unsuccessful: Why your children are going to kill and eat you; and the autobiographical love story that helped to reintroduce spontaneous book burnings in several countries: Crumbs from Mereika’s Table. The Chinese Magus

by Richard Yeo

Xiang Li is a cultured, rational Chinese Mandarin, Governor of Xinjiang Province. He sees a sign in the skies and falls under a compulsion to travel to the west in the depth of winter. Nothing is clear but that he must hurry. His journey takes him through the snow-choked passes of the Tian Shan mountains and the searing heat of the Syrian Desert, through ambush by evil tribesmen and the deadly court of King Herod, while ahead of him rises a light in the night sky...

The Chinese Magus is a compelling evocation of the journey to Bethlehem. Richard Yeo has the gift of taking you right inside the story; the characters are vividly real and come alive in front of your eyes. I felt as if I was taking the journey with them, and was changed by the experience. This is a very special book. ~ Wendy Berg, author of Red Tree, White Tree: Fairies and Humans in PartnershipRichard lives on the east coast of southern Scotland. Dark of the Center Line

by Schuy R. Weishaar

Abraham Jacobsen is misfit for this world. His peculiar gifts have cursed him with a past of good deeds he cannot escape, with dreams and visions he cannot explain, with a future as stone-set as the etchings on a grave marker. Now, just as he has found a suitable place to loose his haunted thoughts in the outer blanks of rural Illinois, Abraham finds himself the prime suspect in the murder of a local girl. He is edged in upon by a priest who wants to see him canonized, an ancient vigilante group with ties to the county’s founding fathers, the dead girl’s farmer father, and local law enforcement. In his roving, Abraham has burned up the road of life in both directions, scorching and scarring as many as he has helped or healed. And the journey has only taken him deeper within the dark of the center line, into a country nothing-world of fields, farms, and roads, a place that seems peopled with his own inner demons and bad memories. But does the dark of the center line lead somewhere too?

No Fire Escape in Hell

by Kim Cayer

Maddy makes a fine living as a singing-telegram performer and is the proud mother to an over-achiever. The downside? She's in a mentally abusive relationship with her husband that she fears may turn physical at any time. Her husband agrees to leave the marriage, but only if she hands over 100 grand in cash. Determined to make that goal, but unable to live with her unstable spouse any longer, Maddy decides to move out. Her only option, in order to save as much money as possible, is to move into her car... Heartfelt and humorous, No Fire Escape in Hell will have you rooting for Maddy as she encounters the goodness in some folk, the badness in others, and endures sleepless nights avoiding the eye of police as she looks for places to take a nap.

A book about a woman fleeing a bad marriage? ... I was prepared for a sombre and sad read. Instead, as the author did with her last book (Lights! Camera! Dissatisfaction...), Kim Cayer has taken a dark subject and turned it into an entertaining, comedic read. The characters (the tow-truck driver, the daughter's transgendered boyfriend, the husband, among others) are well-written and the dialogue is totally believable. An excellent read for anybody, whether you're married or not! ~ Patricia Andrews, producer and actor, and Artistic Director, The Performing Arts Group Acting School.Kim Cayer is a professional performer and a writer, as well as a mother to three teens.
