William Briggs

William Briggs has been variously a teacher, a journalist and political activist. He worked as a teacher of English and History in Tasmanian high schools for a number of years, and as a journalist. For three years he lived and worked in the Soviet Union for an Australian left-wing newspaper. Later, he resumed full-time study, completing a MA and a PhD in International Relations from Deakin University. Since then he has remained affiliated with Deakin and has written extensively on issues of political theory, international politics and political economy. He is the author of three books, two of which have been with Zero Books. He is a regular contributor to the blog/newsletter, Pearls and Irritations. Much of this has been around the broad issue of the rise of China, its ramifications for Australia and the US and on the rising tensions and threats of war that stem from the United States policies towards China, while maintaining a critical position in relation to Chinese domestic policy. He lives in Melbourne.
