Determined to hang prayer flags at Mt. Everest Base Camp, Olivia trekked through Tibet while under the scrutiny of Communist China. She survived earthquakes, landslides, and a middle-of-the-night hijacking while enroute to a remote village in Nepal. Confronted with her own sense of meaning, she went toe-to-toe with the suffering, challenges, and decisions that all beings face, which included the capacity to love and let go.

Wilson, told from the perspective of a careful observer. Wilson explains in an opening note that this book is based on a true story, but the names have been changed out of respect for those who have become characters in her book. The story starts with Olivia telling her boyfriend, Chris, about her planned trip to Tibet. Rather than celebrating this announcement, Chris is concerned about her safety and forbids her to go. Not wanting to miss an opportunity of a lifetime, Olivia plans her journey anyway, one she hopes will help her find a new version of herself while leaving her failing relationship behind. While in Tibet, Olivia visits base camp on Mount Everest to place a prayer flag there with the names of family and friends written on them. She also takes time to honor the memory of those killed in an avalanche in October 2014. During a return visit to Nepal, Olivia experiences two major earthquakes and numerous aftershocks. This changes her mission from one of self-exploration to one of service to those impacted by the earthquakes. Olivia now sees a new version of Nepal as the people struggle to survive after facing major destruction. While visiting some of the Nepal's sacred sites, Wilson shows through Olivia's experiences some of the tenets of the Buddhist religion. She does a wonderful job of describing the beauty of the people and the landscape of this hidden part of the world. While the book can be hard to follow at times because of the author's style of writing, it does tell a fascinating story. Comment on this story "Stillness on Shaking Ground" contains some descriptions of adult relationships, but does not contain any graphic sexual details or sexual innuendos.
