The term ‘power animal’ was introduced into contemporary language in 1980 by anthropologist Michael Harner, in his classic work The Way of the Shaman, and refers to a broad-based animistic and shamanic concept where the animal is conceived as a tutelary spirit guide that helps or protects individuals, lineages and nations.
Horses and humans became companions a long time ago, and the horse adopted as a power or totem animal represents power, speed, courage, nobility, freedom and chthonic energy. Black Horse, White Horse: Power Animals Within Traditional Witchcraft guides your footsteps on this most ancient of paths…

Too often in life, there are long books that should be much shorter, containing too much extraneous detail and not enough substance. This book, on the other hand, contains no waffle, padding or filler, with more substance than many a book of double its length. 'Black Horse, White Horse' condenses into less than 100 pages pretty much every facet of what horses have meant to us over the ages, covering beliefs, traditions, folklore, symbolism, mythology and superstition across many cultures. It is a fascinating journey through time and space, containing so many ideas and interconnections that can easily be explored further by readers who wish to go into more detail. It also contains correspondences and exercises that can easily be utilised and adapted to harness and work with the primordial powers of equine-energy. This is a admirable work that will prove invaluable to many practitioners, who will wish to keep it close to hand for regular reference. ~ S J, amazon.co.uk
I have been lucky enough to have a copy of this book to read prior to it being published. I did not at first know very much about the horse, although I have lived in the countryside, I've never had a horse, only ridden a few times so my knowledge of very low. Not any more, this book tells us history, background and goes into all aspects of the horse to give us a good ground knowledge before going on to talk about the magical side of horse power. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels a call to either the horse in their magical practice or who simply rides and would like more background knowledge of how our ancestors related to this wonderful beast. I've not read every single word yet and I know I shall read it again and again. ~ Susan Kennedy, amazon.co.uk
I actually know next to nothing about horses but after reading this book I have learnt why the horseshoe on my doorstep needs to be up the 'right' way as well as many other superstitions and stories about horses of which I was totally unaware. At first I wondered about the title of the book but I now understand completely where it comes from, read this and you too will find out. Melusine Draco share with us the history of domesticated horses, the magical perspective on horses, how the term 'horse whisperer' came to be in use and changed over time, the working partnership between man and horse and magical lore. This is a super little book for anyone who has horses, works with horses or who just loves horses and would like to get to know and understand them better. ~ Yvonee, amazon.co.uk

It covers the history of equines along with magical workings, superstitions and lore along with a whole lot more information including wonderful ritual and practical ideas. Whether you work with the energy of Horse or not you will find this book fascinating. ~ Rachel 'Tansy' Patterson, amazon.co.uk
The second book in the Traditional British Witchcraft shamanic pathways series is a passionately indulgent journey alongside another of our favourite totem power animals in all their glory , from the noble courageous war horse, the faithful dependable shire before the plough, the draught hauling the heavy load, the much loved little pony in the field.... right through to the beautiful and gracefull hunter and racer.... I've found within its brief but concise array of history and mythology which has linked the horse and the human since time immemorial, a wealth of new knowledge regarding the magical correspondences for all the varied working and sporting types. Even their cousins the donkeys mules and asses are included in the mix of folklore , charms and curses. As the narrative progresses , we quickly begin to recognise that along with her hounds , one of the major passions of the authors life seems to be her deeply held love of all things horse related, and at times ( having studied a good number of Melusine's books ) we can almost taste the bittersweet way she cares deeply for all animals.. Unfortunately man has been unequivocally capable of inflicting horrendous and often thoughtless suffering on the horse throughout the millenia , but Melusine has also helpfully provided a very appropriate curse to be worked by those of the witchcraft pathways or those familiar with the blacksmiths hammer, against any unknown hate filled individual who considers it amusement to inflict injury on any horse or its relatives....I know of one amateur blacksmith who is now searching urgently for a rusty old used horseshoe nail with the utmost of malevolent intent in his heart. Another fine and highly informative lesson from "the stable" of this excellent traditionalist teacher. Agwren - Northern Ireland ~ Arwren, Amazon
