This book has been glowingly reviewed and praised by Jean Houston, Barbara G Walker, Szuzsanna Budapest and many other ‘greats’ of the women’s spirituality movement of our time. I opened it with considerable excitement to drink in it its beauty and riches and enjoy its poetry, delight and magic. The author provides here a useful manual to explore the many aspects of the Sacred Feminine and to access inspiration, encouragement and empowerment, not just on a personal level, but also to create a “Wisdom Circle”, a community in which rituals can be held to further explore this dynamic and transformational spiritual path specially for women. It is not realistically possible to exclude spirituality from politics because politics is the way in which we are governed and also conditioned. Under patriarchy, women have been in a subservient role to men. Men have acted as intermediary between themselves and a male, authoritarian Godhead who applauds hierarchy and oppression. Under patriarchy, there is no suitable role model for spiritual leadership by women. Yes, theology, not theology! Rev Tate, an ordained minister, tells us about the goddess as deity, archetype and ideal, and through devotion to the Divine Female, we can reshape our personal and societal values and culture. She explains how we can create our own services and rituals to honour the goddesses of the seasons or specific goddesses for particular purposes, such as fighting injustices that are inflicted on our sisters around the world. These can be simple acts of devotion, with lighting a candle and reciting an opening prayer, then providing readings, affirmations, meditations, chants, storytelling and the sharing of experiences. Beautiful prayers are provided with meditations and other useful material to support the work of the group. Rev Tate guides us in the conservation of our unique planet’s precious resources - a political stance which is at the heart of goddess and Earth based spirituality. Whether you are called to teach, write, campaign, heal, inform and raise awareness or give of your time, skills or monetary capacities, the path of the goddess is one of the most important and enjoyable a woman can take. This book will help to awaken you to the goddess by creating a group for ceremonies and meetings to honour the goddess in all her many forms. Heed the calling! Trust the journey! Make a difference! The book is described as concerning "issues of human rights, environmentalism, economic sustainability, spirituality, feminism, and how ideals of the Sacred Feminine offer an alternative to the exploitation of patriarchy and domination of predator capitalism... today men and women are realizing how the ideals of the Sacred Feminine are what we need for a sustainable future, for freedom, justice, women's rights and equality." Book Review: Goddess Calling: Inspirational Messages & Meditations of Sacred Feminine Liberation Thealogy, by Reverend Dr. Karen Tate Published by: Changemakers Books Where to Get It: http://www.amazon.com/Goddess-Calling-Inspirational-Meditations-Liberation/dp/1782794425 Review By: Alan Leddon Goddess Calling Is a work of theology by noted author and radio hostess Dr. Karen Tate. Dr. Tate has been travelling and lecturing for over 20 years, and has a number of published works and articles, including two other books. Goddess Calling is, in the author’s words, designed “to give individuals or those desiring to serve their communities a springboard to offer what I remember were called “sermons from the pulpit” in my early days as a Catholic, with ideas to create a format for a regular gathering or service.” The work fits the bill admirably; the lessons are in easy-to-learn sizes, well written and compelling to read. Dr. Tate illustrates her points with frequent references to world mythology, to history and its modern misinterpretations, and even to Star Trek and Indiana Jones. Dr. Tate leaves no unclarified point – it is an excellent read for those at all levels of understanding what thealogy (and theology) is. Dr. Tate clearly and succinctly explains in terms of politics what types of thought and behavior are associated with honoring the Divine Feminine. Though on the surface this may seem to be an effort to link a particular religious idealism with a political one, there is a deeper intent here: you can understand the behavior of those who are in touch with the Sacred Feminine, even recognize such people, if they conform largely to this as opposed to that. One type of behavior is common among those who know Her; a different kind of behavior is common among those who do not know Her. The roots of this separation are clearly laid out for the reader. To resolve the separation, and to undo the damage caused by this separation, Dr. Tate offers, among many other things, a simple change in the way the reader views the world. Goddess Calling also discusses the hazards of being born female in male dominant cultures. From lives of sexual harassment to those of virtual servitude, from slut-shaming of rape victims and so-called honor-killings of daughters, the dangers of uncontrolled patriarchy are laid bare for all to read about. The solution to this (and the reviewer agrees with this) is, naturally, to seek the Divine Feminine and return Her to equality or ascendency in human thoughts and affairs. Dr. Tate offers steps for this process, which seem in large part to require a great deal of personal responsibility of the parts of individual readers. The work includes several guided meditations. These are standard fare, naturally focusing on Goddesses from mythology and interactions with these figures, and are illustrative of earlier lessons in the book. Having completed reading the book, I say that Goddess Calling: Inspirational Messages & Meditations of Sacred Feminine Liberation Thealogy, by Reverend Dr. Karen Tate will have to make-do with my highest praise, for work and for author. The book delivers nicely on what the title implies and what the introduction and foreword imply. The author’s intent in creating this enjoyable and informative work is clearly met. Goddess Calling is recommended for all readers. ~ Alan Leddon, Editor, Editor, In Spirit Magazine
Goddess Calling may be one of the most startlingly political spiritual books you will ever read. All aspects of life, from the base to the beautiful, are boldly and bravely unearthed as the author calls on humanity to embrace tolerance and compassion, achieve balance, and become ONE. A 'Recovering Catholic' devoted to the Feminine; Karen Tate shares through her 'Sacred Roar' how to discover your inner power, reinforce your connection with the Divine and allow faith to make you fearless! As Karen questions: “Is Deity beyond gender altogether?” my inner voice speaks “Ultimately, we are all light or dust!” Cher Chevalier – Spiritual Adviser and Author of The Hidden Secrets of a Modern Seer ~ Cher Chevalier, Spiritual Adviser & Author
Great guidebook for deconstructing the patriarchy that has so limited the lives of humans on Planet Earth, both women AND men. Men must learn not to be afraid of the social stigma we have attached to what we call "womanish" feelings and expressions. We all must strengthen within ourselves the comforting --the human-- parts of ourselves in our relations with other humans and with all of nature. This book is a good place to start. ~ Florence Stanley, Amazon
“Any woman who has birthed or raised a child, had a book published, started an organization, manifested a temple – they all know the strength, courage and determination women possess…” –Karen Tate, Goddess Calling I’ve been a huge fan of Karen Tate’s radio show Voices of the Sacred Feminine for several years. The voice of Karen and her versatile, diverse, talented, inspirational guests keep me company every week on my commute to teach at a military base. Goddess Calling sounds just like Karen. I could hear her voice in my head throughout the many essays compiled in this book. Readers familiar with her radio show will recognize content, themes, and quotes as they appear sprinkled through the text. There are two features that set this book apart from many of its other modern counterparts: first, the explicit recognition and discussion of the connection between the personal and political. Goddess is more than a nice idea or a friendly, beautiful archetype, she can transform the world. Second, the third section of the book contains a nice selection of guided meditation exercises, perfect for use with groups. So, Goddess Calling is beneficial both to the solitary Goddess woman, helping to contextualize their personal, private experiences with cultural, political, and social realities, and for the ritual priestess as she seeks to plan services, retreats, or programs for members of the community. But I’m not just talking about politics. I’m talking about stretching ourselves, challenging ourselves, trying to accomplish things we might feel are a bit beyond us. It is a journey of becoming and of growing we all must take, and we cannot be afraid of the journey. It’s the journey that steels us. It is the trying, the praying, the stumbling and picking yourself back up, the seeking, the very act of doing that staves off fear and fills us with hope. The destination doesn’t necessarily hold the reward. The reward comes from that which has been gleaned from the journey. The destination is just where you take a deep breath, reflect and relax after the journey has molded you. It’s where we take a respite before beginning again to meet the next challenge or climb the next mountain. –Karen Tate (Goddess Calling, p. 109) Goddess Calling is available from Karen’s website, from Changemakers Books, by request from your local bookstore, and from Amazon. ~ Molly, Editor Wood Priestess Blog

Hello Karen, I've just finished listening to your BATGAP interview for the second time and just want to tell you what a moving experience it has been. Your message couldn't be clearer and I believe it will inspire everyone who listens to it -- especially those of us - and I include myself in this -- who need to "get our act together" and make a meaningful contribution towards peace in the world. Goddess Calling by Karen Tate is one of those books that you sit back every morning and savor. This delightful book has reawakened my connection with Goddess. My only wish is that there were a Goddess Temple near me so I could share in the Goddess experience with others. Five Stars for this book. The lessons and myths that are woven throughout this book very uplifting and eye opening. I recommend Goddess Calling for all those who love The Goddess and wish to connect with Her more. ~ Vivienne Moss, GoodReads
The time is right for a change is the message of this book, and this is almost a manifesto for enabling goddess or the female energy back into the world in which we live. Our patriarchal society has created one deeply entrenched in a military industrial complex, treating people in ways which we should not be accepting of, one that has lost it’s care for humanity, nature and nurture. This book is about creating that reconnection, about realising our societies were ones that previously had women as leaders, historically and that they had much to offer. For me this read as a guide for feminism for the 21st Century, except rather than an unshackling of chains for equality, it felt like a return to that which is feminine to balance our society . It explains how the ancient mythology of the Sacred Feminine as Karen refers to it, has been obscured and demonised, particularly in the West, and how from her perspective women have experienced a form of ‘gendercide’ in the last 40,000 years. In our world women have in my opinion lost the power over themselves in so many ways, whilst being mostly under the illusion of thinking they still hold it. This book is about helping those men and women in the community who are ready to not only become aware of the power they hold, but also enabling it again, and do it in a Sacred Feminine manner. A very straight speaking book, that shouts loud about how we see a very narrow and limiting picture of what it means to be a woman in our society, this picture is about serving man. She highlights how our patriarchal society approves of the nubile sex goddess for man’s pleasure or the giving mother but the roles they expect us to play are all those which are dictated and acceptable to them. She shows how todays society dictates to women the parameters of beauty, for young girls and women to try to live up to the impossible ideal, the distorted views of what women and sexuality should be. Showing statistics which are always rather depressing about women of how we are continually poorly represented in leadership roles, how elderly women end up in poverty, and how women tend to earn less on average. Very clear is it’s message that this is what we now need to move away from, and re-establish the feminine in our society again. But the journey we have come so far showing from when it was debated if women had souls, suffering abuse for wanting the vote and often institutionalised if you were an activist and had any desire for equality, to where we are now, which is clear from this book that we still have a way to go. She asks that we stage a coup, a Sacred Feminine coup, based on the concept of inter-connection, reverence for Nature, a Mother Goddess, and respect of one another and the planet. It’s not a big ask really! She’s asks that we become reconnected with those feminine aspects our ourselves that are empowering us as women, to take back the control. For me her commentary on ‘Big Pharma’ as she terms it shows how the power of healing has been taken away from ourselves and one that resonated deeply. The Dalai Lama said it would be Western Women who would save the world. Karen says “When it’s time to make a choice, find your sacred rage and your sacred roar.” The attributes are wide of women, yet are mostly ignored for the Western ideal of women which is highly skewed, she shows how goddess mythology has much to teach us, and she quotes Elizabeth Gould Davis, “The time has come to put woman back into the history books, to readmit her to the human race. Her contributions to civilization have been greater than man’s, and man has overlooked her long enough.” I don’t think most women realise that we are marginalised continually in our society, we grow up in something which we no longer see happens in a variety of ways, and by reading this I feel you can’t help but see how the feminine was swept beneath the sands of time. An inspiring read. ~ Deborah Walker, Natural Health Radio
Spending time with Karen Tate's "Goddess Calling" is like sitting down with an old friend. It's a fantastic read, a great educational tool, and a treasure trove of wonderful suggestions for ceremony and reflection. This book will be useful to both those who are new to goddess thealogy (the "a" indicates focus on the divine feminine) as well as those of us who have been traveling this path for decades. Karen's writing voice is conversational and authoritative at the same time, a skill she has well-honed over many years as the host of her "Voices of the Sacred Feminine" weekly internet radio show. A touch of humor is also one of her trademarks. In "Goddess Calling" she has gifted us with a combination of scholarship, streetwise savvy, passion for equality and justice, and a flair for creating ceremony. Her astute understanding of the role of religion as an underpinning of our social relations gives a fresh perspective on contemporary discussions about morality. Comments on the current political reality cut to the core, calling for needed transformation that aligns with true maternal values. An inspiring call to action! Karen includes twenty Messages, what are called, in Christian churches, sermons or homilies. Engaging emotional subjects with confidence, she offers perspectives which stimulate our internal conversations. As counselor she suggests ways we can move forward in our appreciation of ourselves and others, offering solid perspectives on achieving more whole and satisfying lives. She also provides guidance as to how we might individually make a difference in the world. The twelve Meditations are truly unique. Karen draws on her extensive experience as tour guide to Goddess sites to craft these imaginative journeys. She honors a selection of images of the female divine from various historical time periods and cross-cultural traditions. In my own work, I have designed and published rituals which have been used successfully by many groups across the United States and internationally who rely on written material for inspiration and content. The pieces Karen has created are first rate; I feel the Goddess's presence when I read them. I applaud Karen for sharing these Messages and Meditations, creations that have been centerpieces of her own spiritual presentations at countless rituals, conferences, and worship services. When dramatically produced, I sense they were quite stunning. Those using the book to design their own rituals and presentations can easily replicate their impact, adapting them to their particular circumstances. I am impressed by the format for designing a sacred gathering in the "How to Use this Book" section. I have led many congregational and group services and find the format Karen is offering well-constructed. This suggested order of service gets the ball rolling, especially when leadership is shared, which is a trademark of goddess spiritual gatherings. A useful tool indeed. For all these reasons, I highly recommend "Goddess Calling." It makes it easy to hear Her and act on the Call, enriching many lives in the process. ~ Elizabeth Fisher, Author, Rise Up & Call Her Name: A Woman-honoring Journey into Global Earth-based Spiritualities ~ Elizabeth Fisher, Amazon

The instinct to share is a beautiful part of the inner feminine spirit in both women and men and this book provides a pathway to do that. So much confidence is gained in group experiences of sharing "with a focus". Healing begins with sharing and that is certainly true with the healing of the feminine spirit in the world. Women who are interested in starting a spirituality group will be helped by Karen's design for services, selections for readings, and meditations to have. She brings a lot of leadership years to this book and that is apparent in her stories about her own experiences at the Goddess Temple in Orange County, the Unitarian Church, and her Sacred Sunday offerings. She is herself a history of the women's spirituality movement. Maybe you are not inclined to group experiences and prefer an individualistic path of spiritual growth. Goddess Calling can be enjoyed as just a good read that takes you into the world of goddess education. You will learn a lot about the strength and wisdom of the feminine goddesses down through the ages. When we call upon any of the 10,000 names of Goddess, we call upon Her qualities within our self. As we strengthen those qualities within, we change the masculine/feminine balance in the world. And Goddess certainly has been calling us to do that! ~ Joan Norton, Amazon
Goddess Calling: Inspirational Messages & Meditations of the Sacred Feminine Liberation Theology” Author: Rev. Dr. Karen Tate Publisher: Changemakers Books (March 28, 2014) 210 pages - Paperback ISBN:-101782794425 ISBN-978-1782794424 Karen Tate author of multiple books on Goddess Spirituality and host of the popular podcast Voices of the Sacred Feminine Radio brings her latest work. “Goddess Calling: Inspirational Messages & Meditations of Sacred Feminine Liberation Theology”. I find this book daring and courageous; offering a precise and accurate view of the condition of women and those who are marginalized and dismissed our our current society. She presents an honest unapologetic presentation that is concise, to the point and not condescending to the reader. She also addresses many myths about Goddess Spirituality as well. Her relentless concern for the underdog fuels her ability to speak the truth without concern of rocking the boat truly inspires me. I find the material fresh for several reasons. Most specifically it is not presented in a”reactionary and alarmist” style that seems so prevalent in books today. This is not a book that one can read in one sitting. It is a wonderful resource that offers specific tools that can me implemented immediately by anyone to bring the change we so desperately need and desire in society: rather than just offering a platform to whine or decry the disparities between the genders. Goddess Calling offers specific hands-on approach to things that we can do to awaken our awareness of the Goddess that each of us have. Karen Tate brings her extensive experience and expertise to this offering. “Goddess Calling” is life affirming, empowering and well researched. I found it very educational and The resources offer impressive credible, solid references for those wanting to explore further. In reviewing any book,I recognize the time, research, and the heart and soul that is poured into a project, so when I am privileged to write a review I actually do read the whole work and not just a brief skim through the material. Review in Goddess Alive, UK Magazine Editor/Reviewer Cheryl Straffon GODDESS CALLING by Rev. Dr. Karen Tate [Changemakers Books (O Books) 2014 pbk UK £9.99 US $16.95] Karen Tate is the author of previous books Sacred Places of the Goddess: 108 destinations and Walking an Ancient Path: rebirthing Goddess on Planet Earth, both reviewed in previous issues of GA! She also runs a weekly Internet programme called ‘Voices of the Sacred Feminine’. Her new book is subtitled “Inspirational Messages and Meditations of Sacred Feminine Liberation Thealogy” which is quite a mouthfiul, but does accurately sum up the book’s contents. It falls into three quite distinct sections: the first is an essay on “The politics of Eco-Feminist Goddess Spirituality: a thealogy for a sustainable future” which is a call for the restoration of Goddess-inspired values to American and worldwide politics. This is followed by 20 chapters of “messages” - that is, addresses given by Karen on a variety of Goddess topics to congregations in American temples, Unitarian services and interfaith forums. These are often thought-provoking and empowering. Finally, the last quarter of the book is devoted to 12 meditations built around Goddesses, such as Sekhmet (fires of transformation), Kwan Yin (healing), Isis (temple of ancient wisdom), Aphrodite (true beauty & self worth), Artemis (independence & autonomy), etc. Karen Tate is an experienced and accomplished faciliator of Goddess spirituality, and this book is both a useful resource for others engaged in such work, and an enjoyable and engaging read for anyone interested in Goddess today. ~ Cheryl Straffon, Goddess Alive Magazine, UK

Karen Tate offers a selection of "Messages" relating the values of Goddess Spirituality - as expressed through the sacred myths of ancient and living Goddess traditions - to today's society, politics, and culture. Then she provides a series of "Meditations" that can help participants awaken those Goddess values in their own lives. Karen brings her deep experience with Goddess Spirituality and the liveliness of her long-running internet radio program, Voices of the Sacred Feminine, to this inspirational book. ~ M. Isidora Forrest, author of Isis Magic: Cultivating a Relationship with the Goddess of 10,000 Names.
To feel loved by the Sacred Feminine is a cure we need and Karen Tate's Goddess Calling helps bring it forth. She offers intellectual food, intuitional inspiration and experiential nourishment to seekers on the path of restoration of the feminine principle for our world. Goddess Calling can be used as a manual to create a wisdom circle or public ritual for a holy-day. She offers words to say for the important yearly cycles of renewal of the deep feminine, as well as guided visualization meditations to take us inward to meet the world goddesses. Reverend Tate honors the archetype of Sacred Union through the story of Mary Magdalene and returns Mary to the company of her sister goddesses where she belongs. Mary Magdalene is but one facet of the world-changing strength of the feminine spirit that comes through in this book of rituals, meditations and political perceptions. ~ Joan Norton, The Magdalene Within: 14 Steps to Awaken the Sacred Feminine, Women in the Circle of Mary Magdalene.
....a hearty “Brava!” to Karen Tate who has created such a powerfully lovely vehicle to help us invoke Her spirit and connect with Her wisdom and guidance as we struggle to create a world of peace, understanding and sustainability in Her name. ~ Donna Henes, Urban Shaman, Author of The Queen of My Self.
