5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2021 Katie McCarthy I am Dyslexic and not particularly fond of reading books for pleasure…. However, this book found me; it had been on my shelf for some time and this week I read it. I was captivated by the story. Although, it took me a little bit to get into, by the time I was almost half way through I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. Not for the faint hearted or overly sensitive of youngsters. A very interesting story which I would recommend. I do hope that Tatiana and Marcus have another spiritual adventure soon! ~ Katie McCarthy, Amazon
C A Mathews 5* Vividly descriptive 10 August 2019 Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase Alternating timeframes can be tricky but the author manages to guide the reader expertly around contemporary and Revolutionary Paris, as her heroine, Tatiana, sets out to rescue the earthbound soul of an ancestor she ‘sees’ awaiting execution in a squalid prison cell. As her insight develops, and with the support of two young men, both distant relations, Tatiana has to steel herself for some frightening experiences. This novel, with its vivid descriptive writing, will delight anyone with an interest in the mystical and in how interwoven the present and past can be. ~ C A Mathews, Amazon and Goodreads
out of 5 stars Mrs A C Intriguing and mysterious 2 June 2019 Format: Kindle Edition Mystery and intrigue dominate this mesmerizing tale from the very first page. When Tatiana finds herself being haunted by an ancestor from the French Revolution, she and her loyal cousin Marcus become embroiled in an escapade to set the spirit free. A web of mystical events sees the children weaving their way through the catacombs of underground Paris and the labyrinth of an ancient French chateau, as they delve ever deeper into the secrets of the past. Williams-Wynn skilfully interlaces all the terror and chaos of the French Revolution with the twists and turns of the children’s investigations into their family history and the spiritual links that lie within. Bob Junghans 5.0 out of 5 starsLost in the Revolution March 26, 2019 Format: Kindle Edition Tati saw visions a cappella Marcus thought he was her fella They lived life to the most Until Granny’s ghost Sent them to find Isabella The grizzly side of the French Revolution and a rollicking teenage adventure seems like an odd pairing, but this one fairly sings as Veryan Williams-Wynn weaves a spellbinding story of ghosts and redemption that ends with heavenly ascension. Williams-Wynn’s clever tapestry of history, fantasy and youthful curiosity, The Spirit Trap, keeps you turning pages, looking for answers. Told through the voice of strong willed, 15-year-old Tatiana, and her two sidekicks, Marcus and Louis, the story is a modern-day quest to free the ghost of a victim of the French Revolution, caught in a state of suspension. The tale moves seamlessly from one time dimension to another, and from spooky to euphoric, as the three uncover revelations about themselves and come face-to-face with the ghost. With a dash of both teenage angst and love to give it balance, and Williams-Wynn’s deft portraiture that immerses you in the locations of the story, whether it be a skanky, smelly cellar, or an 18th century French salon, I highly recommend this book. ~ Bob Junghans, Amazon.com
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 1 March 2019 Format: Paperback I found Veryan Williams-Wynn’s ‘The Spirit Trap’ to be a beautifully crafted story with a wide scope. The author masterfully weaves the narrative between modern day England, Paris, and the French Revolution. It contains mystery, suspense, romance, characters I cared about, and that special kind of something that allows you to really enter the fictional world and to feel that you are right in the middle of the action. I notice that after I finished reading this book, the main character of Tatiana stays with me. I enjoyed the portrayal of her sensitivity and her ability to feel the invisible forces around her, making her a perfect channel for communications with her grandmother. The memory of Tatiana makes me listen and attend more acutely to the world around me, and I catch myself looking for signs of it being animated by more than what my physical eyes can see. This book made me remember the feeling of falling in love with reading supernatural stories at a young age. Williams manages to bring life and vitality to a genre that often seems to have become exhausted by cliches. I definitely think this novel holds appeal to a wide range of audiences, young and old, as it can be read on many levels. It is entertaining, and there is real knowledge of life and death hidden in the evocative tale. I also found it interesting to think how the metaphysical aspects can be linked to new science showing how the experiences of our ancestors are being passed on through our genes. ~ Anne Egseth, Amazon
starsExciting YA supernatural novel ByJames Hartleyon 6 August 2018 Format: Paperback This is a paranormal YA novel about a fourteen-year old girl called Tatiana who finds herself coming into contact with supernatural forces linked to a family portrait. As she and her friend Marcus get more and more deeply embroiled in the mystery, their adventure takes them to Paris where we get a whistle-stop, exciting tour of the Louvre, the catacombs and even the Eiffel Tower. We find out how Tatiana's family history is linked to the French Revolution and get up close and personal with the people and flavour of the times, including the good old guillotine itself. The author's personal story is almost as interesting as Tatiana's: she has trained and worked as a sensitive at the college of Psychic Studies in London and worked as a counsellor specialising in Transpersonal psychology perspectives. You're in good hands with this fast-moving, exciting tale. ~ James Hartley, Amazon / Goodreads

Skipping between wonderfully painted pictures of the French Revolution and the present day, 'what is real?' in this life is brought cleverly into question, not only for Tatiana, but for her friends and family too. Bruce Wilkerson rated it really liked i In the “The Spirit Trap,” the world is animated with unseen forces from a distant path when Tatiana, a young English girl with French grandparents, discovers she is linked to victims of the guillotine during the French revolution. If she doesn’t come to their help, her life will be haunted by their suffering. During her school holidays, a close friend named Marcus accompanies her to Paris where she meets a handsome, yet alienated cousin. Caught between their jealousy and the need to lie to her parents, she explores Paris on a quest to discover the secret of Isabella’s death. I loved the book and didn’t put it down till I had read through to the end. The history of Paris, found in the streets and catacombs, really does come alive with this story. After I had finished, I had to wonder if my own dreams didn’t pull me back to another life just as they did for the characters in the “The Spirit Trap”. ~ Bruce Wilkerson, Goodreads/ Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars A Haunting Thriller By A. J. Greenaway on 5 March 2017 Format: Paperback I guess I’m not what could be described as a ‘spiritual’ person, so it’s a testament to the writing of Veryan Williams-Wynn that she managed to hook me with a tale of the supernatural. Within the first few chapters of The Spirit Trap, my natural scepticism to all things ghostly was probably what attracted me to the MC, Tatiana. In the beginning, she too didn’t want to believe the other-world events that were drawing her into an orbit around the black hole that was the event horizon of another dimension. Inexorably, Tatiana is pulled headlong into a mystery that goes back to the French Revolution. Her cousin, Marcus is the perfect foil to Tatiana’s increasingly bizarre experiences and that relationship is the one that defines the unique character of The Spirit Trap and kept me turning the pages. This is a clever blend of different genres that keeps the reader guessing and chasing the “multitude of the silently whispering dead” until the real reason behind Tatiana’s beautiful haunting is revealed. ~ A. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great strength of the story is that it explores complex ... BySteve A Shawon 3 March 2017 Format: Paperback This is a young adult's novel that would also appeal to older readers because it can be read on a number of levels. It's a fast paced, atmospheric ghost story centred on Tatiana, a spirited teenager who is on a dangerous quest to free the spirit of an ancestor caught up in the French Revolution. The horror of that time is powerfully evoked. The action begins when she is haunted by a painting bequeathed to her family. From the beginning the tension is relentlessly cranked up. The book is also a cleverly observed study of the adolescent psyche. Tatiana is fond of her cousin Marcus who helps her in her search but the equilibrium is disturbed when they are joined by a French boy, Louis. This development introduces elements of romance and conflict. There is also an amusing, ongoing commentary on the relationships between teenagers and their parents. A great strength of the story is that it explores complex ideas about reincarnation and genetic memory in a way that engages the reader without ever patronising him or her. It's a richly textured read. I'm long past being a teenager and I wish books like this had been available in my youth.. ~ Steve Shaw, Amazon UK

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and skilfully delivered By Nigel Jay Cooper on September 12, 2016 Format: Paperback This is one of those books that young adults of all ages will enjoy. The descriptive work is lovely and the narrative moves effortlessly forward, drawing the reader along with it. Part ghost story and part romance, the heroine Tatiana's journey of discovery with her friend Marcus is skilfully delivered by Williams-Wynn. The novel asks a lot of questions about the nature of the supernatural, too - can memories be passed down genetically from one generation to the next? This is an intriguing notion, and it's elements like this that lift this book above and beyond other paranormal tales of its kind. Great read.tg ~ Nigel J Cooper, Goodreads /Amazon /Amazon.com
5.0 out of 5 stars it leaves you pondering mortality and the great unanswered question ByAmazon Customeron 18 July 2016 Format: Paperback A well written inspirational read full of intrigue and suspense, I couldn't put it book down. I personally have no particular belief in the paranormal but this story compelling and plausible tale of the living engaging with the dead, it leaves you pondering mortality and the great unanswered question. The well researched historic background of Revolutionary France is fascinating in itself. The French Revolutionary background is cleverly intertwined with contemporary witnesses of paranormal phenomena. Jul 11, 2016 Susan Hale rated it really liked it Review of the Spirit Trap by Susan Elizabeth Hale Past lives, telepathy, ghosts, dreams and time slips are all part of the life of fourteen-year old Tatiana. At least ever since the portrait of her ancestor Isabella arrives at her home along with an urn containing her grandmother’s ashes. These themes are expertly woven by author Veryan Williams-Wynn, who for many years worked at the College of Psychic Studies in London. Williams-Wynn handles these subjects deftly as Tatiana and her cousin Marcus travel between London, Paris, an ancestral chateau and time travel during the French Revolution. It is up to Tatiana, along with the help of Marcus and handsome French boy Louis, to free Isabella’s ghost and send her to the light. The scenes in the Parisian catacombs were vivid and chilling. A teenage triangle and parental control add to the reality of Tatiana’s story in this Young Adult novel. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened and enjoyed reading the Spirit Trap. ~ Susan Hale, Goodreads, Amazon UK & Amazon.com
5.0 out of 5 stars ByAmazon Customeron 2 July 2016 Format: Paperback I have just finished reading The Spirit Trap and am reluctantly emerging from the intriguing world that Veryan Williams-Wynn has created in her enthralling novel. I suspect I am not ever going to experience the presence of spirits myself but Veryan’s descriptive powers are such that the experiences of her young characters as they are drawn back into the lives of ancestors during the French Revolution is utterly believable; and the atmosphere and physical features of the places in which they experience the past are wonderfully conveyed. The tale is compelling. The Spirit Trap is said to be for young adults. I am no longer young but enjoyed it very much indeed and can’t wait for my granddaughter to be old enough to read it. ~ Amazon customer, Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars The Famous Five (minus dog and two members of the gang) meet poltergeist (minus the grotty parts) in a historical novel ByDaniela I. Norrison 19 June 2016 Format: Paperback A story that alternates between the UK, modern-day Paris and late 18th century France, during the French Revolution, The Spirit Trap has a bit of everything: history, teen-drama, a deceased grandmother, a stern French grandfather, aristocratic relatives and of course - some ghosts to up the stakes. Tatiana is an average 14 year old, but when a painting of her deceased aristocratic relative is inherited by her family following the death of her grandmother, everything changes. Tatiana freezes when she hears the cries of a peacock, a harmless bird but one that brings up some inexplicable anxieties. Then she can no longer spend time alone in the drawing room, where the inherited painting hangs, without strange things happening to her. When no one believes her, she enlists the help of her cousin and good friend Marcus, on vacation from his English boarding school. Together, they resolve to solve a mystery that involves beheading during the French Revolution, sad ghosts trapped in a time warp and of course - romance from a few centuries back. The Famous Five (minus dog and two members of the gang) meet poltergeist (minus the grotty parts) in a historical novel for teens that adults will enjoy, too. As a Past-life Regression Therapist I can appreciate some authentic aspects of past life memories that have been simplified to fit the teen readers, but nevertheless, the story flows and reads effortlessly. I loved it. ~ Daniela Norris, Amazon.com and Amazon UK and Goodreads
5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and much more than entertainment ByAmazon Customeron May 30, 2016 Format: Kindle Edition The book is a skilful combination of the subject of reincarnation with the added question about the existence of ghosts. Actually both issues complete each other, something that is often neglected in discussions. And Veryan's book even goes beyond this because it does not just concern the passive acknowledgement of ghosts' existence but also the active freeing of one - and several others. This is done by three juveniles. The book is mainly written from the perspective of fourteen year old Tatiana who for this venture has to win the support of two friends - the one being a bit more sceptical and reluctant than the other in the beginning. Then the story unfolds in a typical adventure story for juveniles - they follow their own quest whilst trying to hide what they are doing from the adults as much as possible. Typical juvenile issues like struggling with the adults for their independence are also part of the story. And the reader sees that 200 years ago a fifteen year old french aristocrat girl had similar problems. The reader follows the juveniles to such a horrifying place as the catacombs in Paris and as the whole story is quite enigmatic it is thrilling like a criminal story. But the deaths happened 200 years ago. In opposite to criminal stories here it is not the purpose of finding the perpetrator but to free the ghost, which means a reconciliation that reaches from the present to the past. That means step by step it comes out that all three of the juveniles played an important role in these past events. Present and past are more and more intertwined - for the reader and in the awareness of the juveniles. So it is even logical and again skilful that reconciliation does not only happen with "someone" in the past but also reaches to the present when the two distantly related families finally start a first contact. In the form of a typical adventure story for juveniles the book offers many quite unusual issues to the young reader - and to the adult as well. The book touches many different levels: not only different times but also different levels of awareness (sensitive Tatiana and the rather ignorant adults), psychological issues, even the power of music and - above all - the need for reconciliation. One can read the book as just a thrilling story and leave it open if reincarnation exists or if it is possible to free ghosts. But certainly there are also juveniles (and adults as well) who are especially sensitive and might not know how to deal with their perceptions. The book offers them an impressive first step in understanding this sensitivity and how to use it in a responsible way. ~ Hiltrud Weiers, Amazon.com
5.0 out of 5 stars Reincarnation scientifically explained ByStairwell Books May 31, 2016 Format: Kindle Edition Why do I read books? Mostly because I’m keen to understand the world I live in and all that it contains. So, being a down-to-earth, practically-minded kind of a guy, that means I’ve tended to avoid science fiction, fantasy, the supernatural and all those inventions of the mind that in my view can’t possibly exist. Or can they? Because now I’ve read THE SPIRIT TRAP, I’ve been forced rethink some of my prejudices. On the face of it the book is a straightforward time-slip adventure. Tatiana, a young teenage girl, is drawn into the past in order to release one of her ancestors from a ‘spirit trap’ so that her soul can rest in peace. She enlists the help of her cousin, Marcus, and another more distant relation, Louis, to aid her in her search. All three begin to discover they have strong ancestral connections based around the French Revolution which lead the reader to be believe they might be reincarnated. The storyline romps along, driven primarily by the search for Isabella but also by the inevitable triangle of relationships that develops between the three main characters. I’m reminded of the Potter books here with Hermione, Ron and Harry - where will Tatiana end up, I wonder? But although currently fashionable and used to good effect by such authors as Pamela Hartshorne (TIME’S ECHO, HOUSE OF SHADOWS etc.), time-slip is nothing new. So what makes THE SPIRIT TRAP stand out in this already well-subscribed genre? Well, subtly concealed amongst the ghostly goings-on is the notion of genetic memory and the idea that the recollections of our predecessors can be passed on with our DNA. And with so much scientific discovery taking place around this area of research it’s an idea that demands our attention. In the hands of another author the notion of genetic memory might seem rather fanciful, but Veryan Williams-Wynn trained and worked at the college of Psychic Studies in London and it’s reasonable to assume she knows something we don’t so her venture in passing on this little gem of knowledge in the guise of fictional form is well worth reading. But not for that alone – THE SPIRIT TRAP is also a really engaging story and comes highly recommended. Readers of all ages have much to gain from this book. ~ Stairwell Bookson, Amazon and Amazon.com and Goodreads
3Star Star With the promise of the supernatural and a haunting family legacy, The Spirit Trap by Veryan Williams-Wynn looked to be a story that was right up my alley. I started the novel hoping to find a haunting and entertaining read. Tatiana had always thought that her life would change as she ventured through her teen years. She had no idea just how big of a change it would be. She had always thought herself to be a fairly normal girl when she suddenly finds herself connected to the spiritual world as a fourteen-year old. She has no idea what caused the change but she did realize that it was the strongest when she was in room that held the portrait and ashes of her ancestor, Isabelle Lefont. Now it was up to her to figure out what the connection was between this new awareness and the ancestor that she had never met. At first, Tatiana feels as if there is no way that she will ever be able to handle the ghostly apparitions that seem to pop up everywhere. Her sanity is pushed to the limit and seems certain to snap when her cousin Marcus and her grandmother’s ghost come to her rescue. Marcus gives her an anchor in reality while her grandmother educates her on her family’s history so that Tatiana can begin to understand the apparitions. Tatiana must go on a spiritual journey over time, back to the French Revolution, to unravel the mysteries of her family and to finally free the souls of her ancestors from the spirit trap they have been trapped in for centuries. The premise for The Spirit Trap is a strong one with a mixture of historical fiction with the supernatural and all tied up under a young adult bow. The book is obviously a young adult novel from the outset as the only character that really has depth in the story is Tatiana. She is a well-rounded character that is meant to appeal to a younger reader and Williams-Wynn succeeds in crafting a strong protagonist for the novel. Tatiana, along with the sometimes vivid details that Williams-Wynn brings to the novel, are the stories definite strong points and the author’s writing talent is on full display throughout much of the book. While I am a fan of young adult fiction, The Spirit Trap was a little bit too much of a young adult novel for me and I could not get into the story. I am sure that I would have enjoyed the novel more if I was closer to the target audience but I could never quite get lost in the story. While there is much to like in the book, I just did not care about the event and felt like an outsider the entire time. The writing is striking at time and the details create a lush world but the story just never seized complete focus from my mind and my response to the story remained lukewarm throughout. I would definitely give Williams-Wynn another chance in the future but The Spirit Trap is a book that I feel is much better suited to a younger reader than for an adult. I would like to thank Lodestone Books and NetGalley for this review copy. The Spirit Trap is available now. ~ Joeph Herandez Minneapolis Books Examiner, Goodreads /Netgalley

I am a huge fan of YA books. This book was a great adventure through history. I am also a big history buff and loved how the author tied in the present and past and the terrible days of The French Revolution. I have read a lot of books that have tried to tie the past and present and have been an epic failure. This author on the other hand is just the opposite. She blends everything so well you begin to feel how the characters would feel. The supernatural was another great and important part of this book. Tatiana finds that she is actually being haunted after she receives her grandmothers ashes and a portrait. What will she do and will she be able to help? I would definitely recommend this book for those who love YA books with supernatural aspects as well as historical. I couldn't put it down. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review. ~ Penny Marks, NetGalley /Goodreads
5.0 out of 5 stars I don't normally write reviews. By Robin on 29 Dec. 2015 Format: Paperback I don't normally write reviews, but my girlfriend passed this book on to me. I thought it was for teenagers at first but now I know its a good read for for anyone, even a 35 year old man. If this was a movie it would be a mixture of Sixth sense crossed with never-ending story with a good dash of dangerous liaison. The story is definitely strong in regards to reincarnation and different dimensions, also has some moments that got the hair up on the back of my neck - nice one. To sum up, I would say an original and well written novel, I guess marketed for teenagers, Ha but don't under estimate the grown ups! ~ Robin, Amazon
4.0 out of 5 stars Oz and Wonderland beware... ByR.P. Blotzeron December 22, 2015 Format: Paperback In this story, which I found similar to Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz, we have a girl who slides into a world not her own, Highly adventurous, The Spirit Trap has wonderfully written characters and a uniquely beautiful setting that will trap you inside as you try desperate to find your way out with Tatiana. ~ R P Biotzeron, Amazon.com
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Full Text: Ghosts, Graves, and Beheadings. Oh, My!! Tatiana, at fourteen years old, seemed to be suddenly connected to the spiritual world. What brought on this change? Initially, the feelings always came in the same room – the drawing room which now held her grandmother’s ashes and a painting of her ancestor, Isabelle Lafont. Seeing ghostly apparitions may have been too much for Tatiana to handle on her own, but she soon received help from her cousin, Marcus. Her grandmother appears and guides her providing a much-needed family history account. Together, Tatiana and Marcus embark on a spiritual journey. Little does she know, the spiritual world will fully impact both of them. This was a bit of many things – reincarnation and ghostly apparitions. Metaphysically, they’d find themselves in an all too real existence as other people in the days of the French Revolution. For this reason, the book is also historical fiction but loosely told. At the beginning, I felt some of the sentence structure could have used additional editing, but it seemed to smooth out and the rest of the story became quite interesting. There was a bit of over drama, I thought, as the grandmother’s spirit told her, “Only you can rescue her now, Tatiana.” However, maybe this works better for teen readers. What may not work for sensitive teen readers is some of the descriptions of the beheadings. This does delve into the French Revolution, after all. One other aspect that bothered me on a personal level is that the teens felt it necessary to ‘kowtow’ – bow down to the portrait of Isabelle. ~ Breakaway Reviewer, Goodreads
tracy s, Reviewer This is a wonderful YA novel that I really enjoyed. Tatiana feels a connection with the spirit world and with a backdrop of the French Revolution is a good historical tale along with the gore of beheadings. It has suspense and mystery in equal measures and one that I would recommend for pre-teens. ~ Tracy S, NetGalley

4.0 out of 5 stars The easy old-fashioned style of The Spirit Trap conceals a compellingly ... By R21 on 16 Dec. 2015 Format: Paperback Verified Purchase If you've never visited the Paris Catacombs, you won't be going alone after reading The Spirit Trap. The atmosphere, without the added spiritual dimension, jumped out of the pages. The same could be said of the French Revolution scenes. A fast-moving novel set mostly between modern Paris and France at the time of the Revolution, in which an English teenage girl, Tatiana, of French & Russian blood, is contacted by her recently deceased grandmother and set on a quest to release the ghost of an 18th century ancestor. Tatiana persuades her cousin, Marcus, to join her and the story follows the pair battling against the real physical and spiritual odds to try to achieve their goal. The easy old-fashioned style of The Spirit Trap conceals a compellingly written so-called young adult novel which anyone of any age would enjoy, particularly if they have the actual knowledge of, or a fascination for the connection between the present and our past lives. ~ R21, Amazon

Good read to take on holiday. Made the hair on my arms stand up. ByD Baylison 31 July 2018 Format: Paperback The back cover of this book which I always read told me it was a ghost story so I bought it as I was looking for 3 books to take on holiday. It turns out I saved the best for last. The hair on my arms actually stood up when I read some of the paragraphs and I don’t scare easily. What I didn’t know when I bought it was that it was also an adventure into the past. Glimpses of the French Revolution crop up when characters go into the past. I became as involved with those characters as I was with the ones in the present. The writer keeps the suspense building so I was never sure what was going to happen next. This was exactly what I wanted for my holiday and I ended up passing the book to other family members including my teenage daughter who also loved it which was a refreshing change from seeing her eyes stuck to her mobile. ~ D Baylis, Amazon
A haunting tale that will grip the older reader as well as the young adult. It carries you through the different timeframes with elegant ease. Fascinating, well written and mind opening. Such a refreshing change from vampires. ~ Judy Hall, author of The Crystal Bibles and Crystal Prescriptions

The alarming screech of a peacock plunges Tatania into a puzzle that is perhaps hers: a previous life in revolutionary France. Veryan Williams Wynn has crafted a great tale – part mystery, part thriller, part ghost story, as two cousins struggle to make sense of hauntings, apparitions, sudden chills and the fate of ancestors who need to be freed from the spirit trap. Along with Tatania and her stalwart cousin Marcus, we follow clues leading to a mysterious French Chateau, snowbound labyrinths and the bony depths of the catacombs deep beneath the streets of Paris. The Spirit Trap is a great yarn and a page turner for young adults and adults alike. ~ Murray Morrison, author of Time Sphere
