However, this book found me; it had been on my shelf for some time and this week I read it. I was captivated by the story. Although, it took me a little bit to get into, by the time I was almost half way through I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. Not for the faint hearted or overly sensitive of youngsters. A very interesting story which I would recommend. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 1 March 2019 Format: Paperback I found Veryan Williams-Wynn’s ‘The Spirit Trap’ to be a beautifully crafted story with a wide scope. The author masterfully weaves the narrative between modern day England, Paris, and the French Revolution. It contains mystery, suspense, romance, characters I cared about, and that special kind of something that allows you to really enter the fictional world and to feel that you are right in the middle of the action. I notice that after I finished reading this book, the main character of Tatiana stays with me. I enjoyed the portrayal of her sensitivity and her ability to feel the invisible forces around her, making her a perfect channel for communications with her grandmother. The memory of Tatiana makes me listen and attend more acutely to the world around me, and I catch myself looking for signs of it being animated by more than what my physical eyes can see. This book made me remember the feeling of falling in love with reading supernatural stories at a young age. Williams manages to bring life and vitality to a genre that often seems to have become exhausted by cliches. I definitely think this novel holds appeal to a wide range of audiences, young and old, as it can be read on many levels. It is entertaining, and there is real knowledge of life and death hidden in the evocative tale. Actually both issues complete each other, something that is often neglected in discussions. And Veryan's book even goes beyond this because it does not just concern the passive acknowledgement of ghosts' existence but also the active freeing of one - and several others. This is done by three juveniles. The book is mainly written from the perspective of fourteen year old Tatiana who for this venture has to win the support of two friends - the one being a bit more sceptical and reluctant than the other in the beginning. Then the story unfolds in a typical adventure story for juveniles - they follow their own quest whilst trying to hide what they are doing from the adults as much as possible. Typical juvenile issues like struggling with the adults for their independence are also part of the story. And the reader sees that 200 years ago a fifteen year old french aristocrat girl had similar problems. The reader follows the juveniles to such a horrifying place as the catacombs in Paris and as the whole story is quite enigmatic it is thrilling like a criminal story. But the deaths happened 200 years ago. In opposite to criminal stories here it is not the purpose of finding the perpetrator but to free the ghost, which means a reconciliation that reaches from the present to the past. That means step by step it comes out that all three of the juveniles played an important role in these past events. Present and past are more and more intertwined - for the reader and in the awareness of the juveniles. So it is even logical and again skilful that reconciliation does not only happen with "someone" in the past but also reaches to the present when the two distantly related families finally start a first contact. In the form of a typical adventure story for juveniles the book offers many quite unusual issues to the young reader - and to the adult as well. The book touches many different levels: not only different times but also different levels of awareness (sensitive Tatiana and the rather ignorant adults), psychological issues, even the power of music and - above all - the need for reconciliation. One can read the book as just a thrilling story and leave it open if reincarnation exists or if it is possible to free ghosts. But certainly there are also juveniles (and adults as well) who are especially sensitive and might not know how to deal with their perceptions. Mostly because I’m keen to understand the world I live in and all that it contains. So, being a down-to-earth, practically-minded kind of a guy, that means I’ve tended to avoid science fiction, fantasy, the supernatural and all those inventions of the mind that in my view can’t possibly exist. Or can they? Because now I’ve read THE SPIRIT TRAP, I’ve been forced rethink some of my prejudices. On the face of it the book is a straightforward time-slip adventure. Tatiana, a young teenage girl, is drawn into the past in order to release one of her ancestors from a ‘spirit trap’ so that her soul can rest in peace. She enlists the help of her cousin, Marcus, and another more distant relation, Louis, to aid her in her search. All three begin to discover they have strong ancestral connections based around the French Revolution which lead the reader to be believe they might be reincarnated. The storyline romps along, driven primarily by the search for Isabella but also by the inevitable triangle of relationships that develops between the three main characters. I’m reminded of the Potter books here with Hermione, Ron and Harry - where will Tatiana end up, I wonder? But although currently fashionable and used to good effect by such authors as Pamela Hartshorne (TIME’S ECHO, HOUSE OF SHADOWS etc.), time-slip is nothing new. So what makes THE SPIRIT TRAP stand out in this already well-subscribed genre? Well, subtly concealed amongst the ghostly goings-on is the notion of genetic memory and the idea that the recollections of our predecessors can be passed on with our DNA. And with so much scientific discovery taking place around this area of research it’s an idea that demands our attention. In the hands of another author the notion of genetic memory might seem rather fanciful, but Veryan Williams-Wynn trained and worked at the college of Psychic Studies in London and it’s reasonable to assume she knows something we don’t so her venture in passing on this little gem of knowledge in the guise of fictional form is well worth reading. But not for that alone – THE SPIRIT TRAP is also a really engaging story and comes highly recommended. 3Star Star With the promise of the supernatural and a haunting family legacy, The Spirit Trap by Veryan Williams-Wynn looked to be a story that was right up my alley. I started the novel hoping to find a haunting and entertaining read. Tatiana had always thought that her life would change as she ventured through her teen years. She had no idea just how big of a change it would be. She had always thought herself to be a fairly normal girl when she suddenly finds herself connected to the spiritual world as a fourteen-year old. She has no idea what caused the change but she did realize that it was the strongest when she was in room that held the portrait and ashes of her ancestor, Isabelle Lefont. Now it was up to her to figure out what the connection was between this new awareness and the ancestor that she had never met. At first, Tatiana feels as if there is no way that she will ever be able to handle the ghostly apparitions that seem to pop up everywhere. Her sanity is pushed to the limit and seems certain to snap when her cousin Marcus and her grandmother’s ghost come to her rescue. Marcus gives her an anchor in reality while her grandmother educates her on her family’s history so that Tatiana can begin to understand the apparitions. Tatiana must go on a spiritual journey over time, back to the French Revolution, to unravel the mysteries of her family and to finally free the souls of her ancestors from the spirit trap they have been trapped in for centuries. The premise for The Spirit Trap is a strong one with a mixture of historical fiction with the supernatural and all tied up under a young adult bow. The book is obviously a young adult novel from the outset as the only character that really has depth in the story is Tatiana. She is a well-rounded character that is meant to appeal to a younger reader and Williams-Wynn succeeds in crafting a strong protagonist for the novel. Tatiana, along with the sometimes vivid details that Williams-Wynn brings to the novel, are the stories definite strong points and the author’s writing talent is on full display throughout much of the book. While I am a fan of young adult fiction, The Spirit Trap was a little bit too much of a young adult novel for me and I could not get into the story. I am sure that I would have enjoyed the novel more if I was closer to the target audience but I could never quite get lost in the story. While there is much to like in the book, I just did not care about the event and felt like an outsider the entire time. The writing is striking at time and the details create a lush world but the story just never seized complete focus from my mind and my response to the story remained lukewarm throughout. I would definitely give Williams-Wynn another chance in the future but The Spirit Trap is a book that I feel is much better suited to a younger reader than for an adult. While I am an older reader, I passed it on to my young daughter who spent two years in Paris at drama school and knows the City and it's history extrremely well, and she loved it. I am a huge fan of YA books. This book was a great adventure through history. I am also a big history buff and loved how the author tied in the present and past and the terrible days of The French Revolution. I have read a lot of books that have tried to tie the past and present and have been an epic failure. This author on the other hand is just the opposite. She blends everything so well you begin to feel how the characters would feel. The supernatural was another great and important part of this book. Tatiana finds that she is actually being haunted after she receives her grandmothers ashes and a portrait. What will she do and will she be able to help? I would definitely recommend this book for those who love YA books with supernatural aspects as well as historical. I couldn't put it down. I thought it was for teenagers at first but now I know its a good read for for anyone, even a 35 year old man. If this was a movie it would be a mixture of Sixth sense crossed with never-ending story with a good dash of dangerous liaison. The story is definitely strong in regards to reincarnation and different dimensions, also has some moments that got the hair up on the back of my neck - nice one. Seeing ghostly apparitions may have been too much for Tatiana to handle on her own, but she soon received help from her cousin, Marcus. Her grandmother appears and guides her providing a much-needed family history account. Together, Tatiana and Marcus embark on a spiritual journey. Little does she know, the spiritual world will fully impact both of them.

This was a bit of many things – reincarnation and ghostly apparitions. Metaphysically, they’d find themselves in an all too real existence as other people in the days of the French Revolution. For this reason, the book is also historical fiction but loosely told. At the beginning, I felt some of the sentence structure could have used additional editing, but it seemed to smooth out and the rest of the story became quite interesting. There was a bit of over drama, I thought, as the grandmother’s spirit told her, “Only you can rescue her now, Tatiana.” However, maybe this works better for teen readers. What may not work for sensitive teen readers is some of the descriptions of the beheadings. This does delve into the French Revolution, after all. One other aspect that bothered me on a personal level is that the teens felt it necessary to ‘kowtow’ – bow down to the portrait of Isabelle.

Good read to take on holiday. Made the hair on my arms stand up. It turns out I saved the best for last. The hair on my arms actually stood up when I read some of the paragraphs and I don’t scare easily. What I didn’t know when I bought it was that it was also an adventure into the past. Glimpses of the French Revolution crop up when characters go into the past. I became as involved with those characters as I was with the ones in the present. The writer keeps the suspense building so I was never sure what was going to happen next.
