Humour and attitude keep Coco going when things get grim. Her relationships with her mother, hospital staff and other injured teens sustain her when her school friendships fall apart. But although everyone's working to give Coco a normal life, Coco doesn't think 'normal' is enough...
When she was fourteen, the author Mimi Thebo died in a car accident. Hospital High is a young adult novel based on the day she died and the subsequent three years spent recovering from the accident.

Based on the life story of Mimi Thebo, this is a beautiful journey based in truth, and the deep and everlasting courage of the human spirit and is one all teens should read...This is the story of growing up, finding and discovering true courage, learning to look below the façade to discover who your friends are really, and what, in the final wash up that comes at the end of high school, matters the most in life. This book made me cry on public transport.... Amazing tale that felt very true to life. ~ Jennifer Hillyard , NetGalley
Coco had me captivated throughout. I sympathised with her, longed for her to get better, and at one point where I had lost my own voice, totally felt her pain. A good read but somewhat wordy! ~ Rikkie Louise, NetGalley
Have you ever been through something so severely traumatic that you didn't know or maybe didn't want to know how to come back from it? You will relate. When Coco is severely injured in a car accident and wakes up after coding in the hospital, she's mad. She wishes they'd let her go where she'd felt at peace with no pain rather than pull her back to this hell she's going through. She's touched that everyone is thinking of her and sending her cards, but not before she's upset that her friend isn't in the hospital bed next to her. Worst of all, she's horrified to learn she may not be able to ever sing again. This book is well written and full of humor but also a lot of real pain and struggle. I loved every minute of it. ~ Melinda Turner, GoodReads
Review copy provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book was so relatable and emotional. I can't think of much to say about this one, I'm still processing my feelings. Did you ever experience trauma and just want to give up? That's what this story is..it may be a hard read if you've been there.. ~ Hospital High, NetGalley
What a great YA novel. I am always in search of books in the YA genre that do not fall into the fantasy category. It is nice to have some variety for the younger folks (or an easier read for us older ones) that has a little something different. Written in the tune of a memoir, as it is based on a true story, it follows her through dying, and then learning to relive after such a traumatic even at a young age, one that affected her talents and dreams. Some of it was gut wrenching, some was lighthearted, and all of it was enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this book as a YA read for all ages. ~ Amy Wolf, NetGalley
This is one of my must reads for this year. The story of a young girl and her fight to regain her voice after a car accident is truly amazing. The author grabs your attention and doesn't let go. I read it in less than two days and still find myself thinking about the tale, which is based on a true story. Highly recommended for teen readers. ~ Margaret Pemberton, Librarian at Growing the School Library, NetGalley
Coco didnt really fit in with her friends or classmates. Her mother was a little odd. Her father brutally let them for another woman with no remorse. Then there was the car accident that changed her life. I'm genuinely struggling to find the words to describe this book that will do it justice. I loved every single page of it. I actually adore Coco. I loved her relationship with her mother and the doctors. I loved how she reluctantly became someone she could depend on. I loved the love/hate relationship with Dr Kular. I feel like the accident, whilst traumatic and life changing, was a positive in Coco's life to make her really and truly appreciate her life. That ending, oh yes, was so beautiful ~ Claire Wassell, NetGalley
Buckle up, because you're in for a bumpy (but great) ride! This book is a great mix of humour and darkness! It's well written and has a great writing style with a great pace! Coco was a great character and I loved spending time with her. ~ Victoria Tickle, A Novel love
The first line is a corker and it just carries on... I loved the trueness of the characters - they weren't mawkish or being the 'inspiring hero' but made mistakes and fumbled along to somehow come out the other end in style. ~ Karin Celestine, Instagram
This book is amazing. Feel like I've just been on one incredible, sometimes laugh out loud funny, always intensely moving journey & graduated from the most appalling small town American high school. ~ Lu Hersey, Twitter
A powerful, raw and honest book. ~ Gill Lewis, Twitter
This had me completely hooked by the first page! This is well written, the pace is consistent, it's humorous and fun and has great characters! there were some dramatic events that left me kind of shocked, like, how could that happen?! The friendship between kim and coco is so heart warming, and heart-wrenching too. not once did i feel like it was dragging on. everything was at the perfect pace. i enjoyed this so so much, and would recommend this to anyone who is looking for an emotional read! ~ 'mymy', goodreads
This is a book for teens and is very personal to the author as it is based on a true story. It is the story of Coco, who ends up in hospital after a car accident, where she suffers internal injuries including crushing her voice box. The ensuing months and years follow her struggles to regain her health, but also to see how her relationships with family and friends pan out. It is a totally uplifting tale that I will probably read again and would definitely recommend to other adults as well as to the intended audience. ~ Margaret's Reading Shelf, Edublogs

Praise for Mimi Thebo's previous novel Dreaming the Bear: Mimi Thebo's Dreaming the Bear has been chosen as a 'Future Classic' in the 2016 book pack and six copies have been supplied to all secondary schools in the UK. ~ Booktrust
Praise for Mimi Thebo's previous novel Dreaming the Bear: Mimi Thebo captures an authentic teen voice and the writing throughout the story is hauntingly beautiful, almost dreamlike in places, while remaining easy to read and enjoy. I was reminded of David Almond's children's classic Skellig and I can quite see Dreaming the Bear joining the canon of children's classics. ~ Bookbag
