John Hunt Publishing began in 2001 under the name of O Books. We have since published over 1,400 authors under a number of different imprints, largely run by authors themselves who have gravitated into the business, supported by a network of several dozen editors, designers and publicists based in the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland and Europe. Half our authors are from North America, the other half from the UK and all parts of the globe. We rely heavily on in-house online publishing systems which we have developed to keep everyone informed of every aspect of editorial, production, sales, marketing and publicity. So authors for instance can see the progress of their manuscript through editorial and production, the print runs, the results of any marketing activity, and their monthly sales. They also have access to the database of over 40,000 contacts, and can add to it. We invest in social media, as well as in reaching out to traditional stores. There are closed author forums for different imprints, and open ones for readers. We have over 60,000 Facebook followers across the imprints. Sales, accounts and royalties are handled from a small central office.
On occasional hard to market books we ask for a small subsidy – around 10% of our titles have one. We provide reader reports, editing, worldwide distribution, sales, marketing and publicity for all titles. We also offer author services in three areas; for heavy editing/rewriting/mentoring, extra marketing and publicity, and websites. 5% of our income is from authors, 95% from selling books, out of which we pay 50% royalty on ebooks, and 10-25% on print.
