Rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Tipping from mystery into occult territory, Nila's Babies is a gothically stimulating psychological horror tale featuring a bi-racial nanny, a widower, his twin daughters, and one demon who has big plans for all those who cross her path. Excellent character development, delightful dialogue, and just plain good storytelling. ~ Erica Watkins (Reviewer), NetGalley
Scary, atmospheric, creepy and enjoyable. Great book that was a real page turner. Good story and relatable characters ~ Tracy Clarkson (Reviewer) , NetGalley
NILA'S BABIES by Jac Simensen is a paranormal romance/thriller that very convincingly commands the attention of the reader. The story is set in a world where the paranormal live among normal people and alter their lives quite easily. The pace of the story is good and so is the character development. The relationships are given time to grow and bonds are made at a regular tempo so even the horror doesn't seem out of place. What really grabbed by attention from the get-go was the fact that the author didn't rush anything. He kept an almost leisurely pace that made the story believable and at times, terrifying. This was an intense read. I was biting my nails at one point and was positively terrified at what would happen next. The characters were believable and relatable . The author did an amazing job of portraying Lilith, the ancient demon and her terrible powers. Nila was a strong character, someone who many readers could relate to, especially mothers. I enjoyed this novel even though I often found the action terrifying. ~ Rabia Tanveer, Reader's Favorite
.......and has an interesting storyline... I would try this author again. ~ Heather Bennett , NetGalley
"Lilith and Hattie, her pale daughter, were condemned by the gods of creation to eternal life and they walk the earth today, just as you do." Utilizing myths from Christian, pagan, and Ashanti beliefs, Nila's Babies is a fast-paced guilty pleasure of sex, violence, and dark magic. The author does a great job of providing a balance between the gritty, gory moments and the sweet, happy moments using the two characters of Lilith and Nila, who are essentially foils for each other. Lilith's character is more riveting, partially because of her backstory of being kicked out of Eden, but also because of her pure enjoyment of being evil. Nila, on the other hand, is young, hopeful and a source of positive, nurturing energy. But, she still has a power that rivals Lilith's own.As the first book in a series, the author does a great job of laying down the foundation without giving too much away, only hinting at what's to come in subsequent books. ~ Gabriella Tutino, US Review of Books
I was mesmerized by the original, fresh story and appreciated the strong writing. Even though there are familiar elements, (demon possession, magic powers, good vs evil, etc,) it is all bound together in a way that is unlike anything I've read before. I loved it!...Fast paced with some very sexy scenes that are both hot and creepy. The steam, the intrigue, the characters, especially, Nila's mystical powers with so much more depth then the powers supernatural beings have in most horror novels. Recommended for readers of dark, urban fantasy, and erotic horror thrillers. ~ Annabella Johnson, Goodreads
A widowed father and a new nanny form a romantic connection in the midst of malcious witchery in this supernatural thriller. A textured, sinister tale of good versus evil. Life deals a crushing blow to Floridian, Gordon Hale, when his wife, Karen, succumbs to brain cancer, leaving him a single father with 1-year old twins. His sister, Mary, urges him to hire Nila Rawlings, a highly recommended, 23 year old British nanny. Gordon reluctantly agrees and soon Nila is watching over the girls in Gordon's family beach cottage in Castle Key. After Nila moves in the author weaves sinister themes of witchery and demonic possession. The demon next door neighbor, Myra Silk using voodoo witchcraft riruals to create human zoombies under her control and hatching a plot to corrupt the twins. Nila and Gordon grow closer as they care for the twins and eventually fall in love. Simensen throws his narrative into high gear when Gordon's embittered, drug-addicted ex-girlfriend, Maggie breaks into the house, threatening the twins and Nila must defend the babies with lethal force. When Maggie's dead body goes missing from the morgue, Myra invokes a powerful ritual and the author sets up a devilish premise, delving into romantic mystery, horror and supernatural suspense to satisfy a wide variety of readers. This impressive and vividly imagined story will keep readers guessing throughout - and it even leaves room for a sequel. A quirky, ambitious novel that's suprisingly compelling and devilishly spooky. ~ Kirkus Reviews
I love it! (5 stars) Nila's Babies is a great blend of supernatural, but in a realistic, believable setting with an erotic bent. Riveting characters who continuously surprised me throughout the story and an ending that makes me want more. What more could I ask for in a book? How about tight, focused writing, and (near) flawless editing. I was very impressed with the story line and character development and will be looking to read more of Simensen's books. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys spicy, haunting reads with an intelligent and unpredictable plot that stretches the imagination and explores the darkest corners of your psyche. ~ Symantha Ryann, Goodreads
I gobbled up Nila's Babies in two nights! Jac Simensen just paints scenes and characters so well that we are in their lives and invested before we know what has hit us. It has everything - family, romance, hot sex, murders, secrets, strange powers, demon possession. A compelling and addicting journey that delivers a shocking, bizarre, believable experience. Nila's Babies is insanely creative, super sexy, graphic, intelligent, psychological and passionate... it's one thing after another! There is a strange mix of being in a 'normal' world that is horrid and frightening at the same time. I loved being inside this mysterious world and didn't want to leave. A shocking, seductive and satisfying escape I highly recommend to readers looking for unforgettable characters, a creepy and sexy storyline and fantastic writing. ~ Brenda Maxwell, Indie BookReviewers
