Jon Salfield

Jon Salfield

Jon has been a professional fencing coach for over 20 years. A former international fencer and professional musician, he is considered the most prolific British sabre coach of the modern era, producing dozens of international fencers who have won numerous medals on the Cadet and Junior World Cup Circuits, and reached Junior and Cadet World and European finals.

Jon was Team GB sabre coach at the London 2012 Olympic Games and he has an extraordinary breadth of experience, from working in Primary schools to coaching national teams at Senior, Junior and Cadet World Championships.

Having come late to the sport of fencing and starting his sporting life in an environment without access to international fencers, coaches, or structured training, Jon carved his own way in the sport as an athlete and coach. He started out at the same club he heads today, Truro Fencing Club, and he and the club have grown alongside one another. Selected to represent Great Britain for the first time at the age of 30, Jon qualified for the European Championships in 2004, and went on to represent his country more than 30 times.

As well as Head Coach at Truro Fencing Club, Jon is also Head Coach at Cambridge University, and leads the GB Senior Men’s Sabre squad at World Cups and Championships. He has written for The Sword magazine and appeared in films and on television as a stunt double for sword-fighting scenes. He was also featured in the DVD extras of the television series ‘The Borgias’ and was the fencing instructor for the DVD ‘Learn fencing - Advanced Sabre’
