Anne: There was a lot more of that to come but as time went on little happened that we noticed until around Easter 1990 when the activity started to pick up. Just little things at first but it was like it was building up. The things that happened were very human in some respects but I honestly don’t believe the thing in the house was human at all. It plays with you, it puts you on edge, it makes you paranoid and insecure, it wants you to question your sanity.

Dai: It was messing with us. It pushes and pushes to see how much you will take. Everything up to now was like it was testing I guess or building itself up for the real damaging stuff.

Anne: It was Good Friday and I was off, as was Dai, and we had a late night. I can’t exactly remember what we were up to but I think we had gone out for a few drinks or a meal, something like that as we both didn’t have to be up early the next day. I got up and made my way downstairs. The stairs don’t have a bannister so as you walk down you can see into the dining area as you head directly to the bathroom. The light was coming in from the front window and as I headed down I looked at the clock on the dresser to check what time it was, and it was just after ten. I went into the bathroom, had a pee and headed back out, and I did a double take as on the floor was big muddy boot marks across our nice cream carpet. I was furious as I first thought that Dai had done it and then I panicked as I thought we had been burgled but the footprints only went left to right across the carpet, wall to wall, not from the door to the living room and through the house but wall to wall. I remember panicking, like really scared someone was down there and ran upstairs shouting for Dai to wake up.

Dai: Anne burst into the bedroom shouting and it scared the life out of me. She was panicking and she was getting dressed in a hurry. She said someone was downstairs. I thought what? I jumped out of bed and headed down and couldn’t see anything. I checked the kitchen and bathroom and the front door and everything was locked. There was no one in the house. She was calling down the stairs to be careful, and then she said, “How did the footprints get in the living room?” And I said, “What footprints?”

Anne: Dai was down there and I expected something to smash or Dai to start shouting at someone, but he just called up and said, what was I on about?

Dai: There was nothing at all to even consider we had an intruder. I told her to come down and see for herself.

Anne: I went down slowly as I half expected Dai to be held hostage and they were telling him what to Say . Dai was stood directly under the arch that divides the living room from the dining room and he was just stood there in his pants looking tired and confused. I looked to where the boot prints had been and there was nothing. Not even a hint that someone had walked through. My heart was pounding in my chest, as I know what I saw.

Dai: She showed me where she thought she saw the boot prints and there was nothing at all. I couldn’t even begin to make an excuse for her and say she had mistaken it for something else. I said maybe she had been tired or maybe she had looked at the light of the window and it made those imprint things on your eyes after you have looked at a bright light for too long. She swore they were there and she got cross saying she knew what she had seen. I got cross back and said, “Where were they then? "I told her I hadn’t made them, I hadn’t cleaned them up, “So where were they?”

Anne: We had a row as we were both stressed. I was convinced that I had seen them. They were big and muddy and very clear, maybe six or seven boot prints in all. Dai mocked me and said what six? What was it a giant? He said the person would have to be so tall to have a stride that long. He said I was making it up.

Dai: Yeah, I was rough on her that morning. I think that's when the cracks began to appear.

Anne: We started arguing and when you do loads of stuff comes up, you know, buried stuff. He said I didn’t listen to him, and I said he was more interested in watching the bastard TV.He said I’d rather be on the phone chatting to the world thantalking to him, and I said that talking and listening about sportwas boring and I didn’t give a hoot. And then I stopped as I sawsomething that just took the wind out of my sails.

Dai: We were arguing over petty stuff if I recall, but I just got so angry. I’m not a fan of confrontation and I hate it. Anne is good at it so I tend to keep my head low, even now. I was off on one and just fuming at the things she was saying. I remember saying something like if she was a bloke then I would knock her out, things I would never say, and then she just stopped and looked behind me and the color drained from her face. I turned and I wasn’t sure what I was looking at.

Anne: It was like time froze as behind Dai was our leather armchair; a lovely chair that was given to us by Dai’s grandparents and the chair had an impression on the seat. Something I never noticed before and never noticed again. There was an impression like someone was sat there. I pointed to it and Dai looked at it saying what, what was I on about now?

Dai: I looked at the chair and the strangest thing was that it looked like someone was sat on it. I hadn’t sat on it and Anne was nowhere near it and I watched as the impression in the chair slowly disappeared as if someone had just stood up.

Anne: It was as if someone was sat there, or had been sat there. Looking back, I imagine something sat there just enjoying us arguing like it was a spectator. To this day I have no idea where those footprints went but soon enough we would know who left them behind.
