These are some really easy basic recipes that you can add your own flavourings and herbs to, adding in your own magical intent.  They also work well for the feasting at rituals.  Taken from my book A Kitchen Witch's World of Magical Food.

Sweet Biscuits

Use this base recipe and add in any herbs or spices that match your intent.

125g /4oz butter

125g /4oz sugar

250g /8oz plain (all purpose) flour

1 egg, beaten

Pre-heat your oven to 375F, Gas 5, 190C.

Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy add in the egg and then sift in the flour and mix until combined to form a firm dough.  Now add in your herbs or spices visualising your intent and desired outcome as you stir them in.

Leave the dough to rest in the fridge for about an hour if you can as it will make it easier to handle.

Roll your dough out on a lightly floured surface and cut the dough into shapes either with cookie cutters or go free style… pop the shapes onto a greased and floured baking tray and bake in the oven for about ten minutes.

Leave to cool on a wire rack.

Sponge Cake

Use this sponge recipe as a blank canvas, adding in different spices, fruits or even herbs.  Tray bakes are brilliant as they are simple to make and excellent to cut up and use for rituals or celebrations.

225g /8oz butter, softened

225g /8oz sugar

275g /10oz self raising flour

2 level teaspoons baking powder

4 large eggs

4 tablespoons milk

Pre-heat your oven to 180F/Gas 4/350F.  Grease and line the base of a 12 x 9 inch baking or roasting tin.

This is an all in one recipe so all you have to do is pop all the ingredients into a large bowl and whisk them together until combined.   If you are adding spices, fruit or herbs stir them into the mixture at this stage.

Pour the mixture into your prepared tin and bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes.  Leave to cool in the tin then cut into pieces.

Pizza

A pizza base is a perfect background to add in all sorts of wonderful magical ingredients if you fancy something savoury rather than sweet (personally I would have both…).

You can buy packets of pizza mix that you just add water too but it is really easy to make.

300g /10 ½ oz strong bread flour

7g (2 level teaspoons) fast action dried yeast

1 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons olive oil

175ml/6 fl oz warm water

Pre-heat your oven to 240C/475F/Gas 9.

Combine the flour salt and yeast in a bowl and then gradually add the oil and water, mixing together to form a soft dough, it will be slightly sticky.

Dump the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes (or 5 minutes in a mixer with a dough hook).

Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces then roll them out nice and thin.  Place them on greased baking sheets then add your toppings.

You can go with the traditional tomato sauce but I like to use a white béchamel sauce instead.

Once you have added your toppings bake them in the oven for 8-10 minutes
