Introducing Children to Paganism - Debi Gregory

One of the questions I’m asked most often is when parents should introduce their kids to Paganism. I think they’re looking for a definitive answer but the truth is that there isn’t one. Each child is different and each family dynamic allows for organic discussions on various topics in different ways and at different times.

But here are some pointers for knowing when your children might be ready -

  • When they show an interest - If they’re old enough to show an interest, they’re old enough to have that interest expanded on.
  • When faith studies come up at school - It’s never a bad idea to amplify the education children are getting at school, in any subject, but because the education on faiths and spiritual practices is so limited in school settings, it’s probably a good idea to access some resources on this and make it a routine to expand on any lessons. This way you can be sure to give information about your own faith practices an even footing with the other faiths.
  • When they ask - There are many scenarios that could come up during childhood that make them want to ask questions. Children trusting you enough to come to you for this information is important. Be sure that you’re open and honest with them. If you don’t know something, tell them! It’s very beneficial for children to understand that you don’t have to know everything. That way you can also say “I’m not sure about that, why don’t we find out together” meaning you both learn something new and you get to have that shared experience to enhance your bonding.

Many parents in our community worry about their children being brainwashed or forced into religion in a way that perhaps reflects their feelings about their own upbringing but there is a world of difference between educating and indoctrinating. As they say, knowledge is power! And in this world of increasingly open diversity and understanding, it’s imperative that we don’t withhold information from our children out of fear of what they’ll do with it. Giving them information is giving them a leg up in a world that can often feel overwhelming.

If you’re unsure about any of this, there are resources out there to support you.

The Pagan Federation has a Children and Families Team who offer advice and support, as well as fun and information online resources for families, including their online publication, Aether, and their delightful Aether patches, which are similar to the Scouts, where you do activities to earn patches to sew onto a sash or shirt or whatever you like!

There’s also the Pooka Pages and Little Pagan Acorns, which offer fun, reliable and diverse resources to aid home education and learning about Paganism.

If you’re looking for path specific resources, there are more books available than is immediately obvious!

Walking With The Gods is a Heathen activity book with stories, puzzles and other fun for Heathen and Pagan families.

Anything by Siusaidh Ceanadach is definitely worth getting! Other great authors for children include Brigid Ashwood, JC Artemisia, Fiona Tinker and Jennifer Hartman! And hey, you could always try my book too! ;)
