Aliens, Robots & Virtual Reality Idols in the Science Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov and William Gibson

H. P. Lovecraft’s aliens are extra-terrestrial, terrestrial & trans-dimensional entities, totally unlike any other aliens in science fiction literature. In contrast, Isaac Asimov's and William Gibson’s aliens are human created positronic robots and virtual reality constructs, or 'idols'.

Lovecraft’s great theme is alien indifferentism, tinged with a malevolence that escalates into an existential, apocalyptic threat against humankind, while for Asimov and Gibson, alien inclusionism is the norm. The robots and the VR idols integrate into society and their influence appears to be beneficial. But this is only on the surface.

In this book, John L. Steadman demonstrates that there is ultimately little difference between alien indifferentism and alien inclusionism in the fictional works of these three great writers. For in fact, the robots and the VR idols evolve into monsters whose actions bring about outcomes which are every bit as terrifying as anything in Lovecraft’s work.

Humans tend to be isolates ('alien'-ated). The reader is invited to question this, and to consider the possibility that an alien perspective, or platform, might, perhaps, be crucial if we intend on seeing ourselves clearly and understanding exactly what it means to be human.

Harvest

G.L Davies invites you to join him on his most terrifying investigation yet.

In 2009 one woman from Pembrokeshire believed she was abducted by aliens. What followed was a terrifying ordeal of alien visitation, nightmarish visions, encounters with terrifying creatures, a connection to the past and a prophecy of destruction on the scale never before seen in Pembrokeshire’s peaceful history. Should these events be true, then no one is safe. The harvest has begun…

Christianity Expanding – Into Universal Spirituality

Christianity Expanding - Into Universal Spirituality takes us on a whistle-stop tour of the areas that need updating if Christianity is to flourish in the 21st Century.

New science, ecological concern and the need for new theology are all converging into a maelstrom of change. With broad brushstrokes on a big canvas, a path of personal transformation is charted, drawing on the mysterious Perennial Wisdom teachings that have survived down the ages. Pulling no punches, Don MacGregor delves into typically taboo subjects such as reincarnation, drawing a distinction between Jesus and the Christ. This dynamic first volume of The Wisdom Series is an initial outline of areas that demand ongoing exploration.

The Conscience of a Progressive

The Conscience of a Progressive begins where Senator Barry Goldwater’s The Conscience of a Conservative (1960) and Paul Krugman’s The Conscience of a Liberal (2007) leave off. Prof. Klees draws on 45 years of work around the world as an economist and international educator to paint a detailed picture of conservative, liberal, and progressive views on a wide range of current social issues. He takes an in-depth look at his specializations: education, economics, poverty and inequality, international development, and capitalism. He examines major social problems like health care, the climate crisis, and war. Throughout the book, Prof. Klees tries to give a fair and careful depiction of how conservatives and liberals see these issues, whilst focusing on critiques by progressives, and on the alternatives they offer.

Dungeon Party

Dungeon Party links a fantasy world and the people playing in it.

When longstanding personality conflicts erupt, the volatile Randall Keller secedes from Alan Crandall’s gaming group. In pursuit of a coveted prize at an upcoming convention, Alan replaces Randall with two female recruits who reinvigorate the campaign.

Randall chooses a darker path by spreading infectious cynicism through the gaming community while plotting his revenge. When the Middle Mirth convention gets underway, Alan's group must stop Randall and his avatar before they devastate worlds both fictional and real.

Medicine of the Imagination: Dwelling in Possibility

The human imagination gives rise to the most beautiful man-made structures and creations on Earth: architecture, literature, theatre, music, art, humanitarian initiatives, moon landings and space exploration, mythology, science, they all require a large dose of imagination. We all live surrounded by the results of the imagination of our peers, and the creations of our ancestors. Without imagination there is no compassion, no moral compass and no progress.

But without imagination there is also no fear of death. There are no premeditated murders or terrorist attacks; these rely on the human ability to imagine, to call up images and test-drive possible scenarios in the human mind. Once we get out the magnifying glass, we discover that the imagination is a double-edged sword. All of us together, humanity as a collective, are creating very confused and mixed outcomes: world peace remains elusive, wars rage and children starve. Addictions and pollution proliferate.

Medicine of the Imagination: Dwelling in Possibility examines these issues and suggests that if we are to transcend religious wars, homophobia and medical “cures” worse than the diseases we face then it that it is our moral duty to engage our imagination in service to other people.

Pagan Portals - Stories for the Songs of the Year

Stories for the Songs of the Year is a collection of new children's stories which celebrate the festivals and seasons. The tales follow the adventures of Attila and Meg, a know-it-all rabbit and a cat with half a tail, who generally cause chaos and mischief for Angus Óg and which introduce Celtic Gods and some of the ideas central to Celtic beliefs in an age-appropriate way. The stories will also appeal to pre-teens who are able to read for themselves and who may be ready to begin to explore their own spiritual paths.

Tinker’s book also includes a short, factual essay written for parents, covering many practical matters, which is both helpful and informative for parents wishing to explore their own Pagan paths with their children.

Removing the Stalin Stain

Can Marxism emerge from the long shadow cast by Stalinism, and challenge capitalism?

There is undoubtedly a growing interest in Marxism and socialism. Opinion polls show a majority that regard socialism as a real option. It is against this reality, and as a contribution to growing debates, that this book has been written. Marxism, as an ideological force and instituted to lead the charge against capitalism, has been poorly served in the past century. Many of its core messages have been obscured.

William Briggs gives a rousing defence of Marxism, calling for a return of the working class to the centre of potential struggle. Briggs seeks to heal the damage done to Marxism, in the name of Marxism, over generations past.

Resetting Our Future: A Chicken Can’t Lay a Duck Egg

Vast swathes of the current economic system have to be dismantled to secure humanity’s future. Until recently that was thought impossible. Covid-19 proves this wrong. It is possible to shut polluting businesses overnight and pay people during a transition. Because Covid-19 has done half the job for us, a sustainable future is finally within our grasp. This book explains how societies can embrace this unique chance to build a future where people live with decency, and in balance with nature.

Resetting Our Future: A Global Playbook for the Next Pandemic

The health and economic devastation caused by COVID-19 has revealed that most countries’ national health systems are inadequate to cope with pandemics. These are global challenges that call for global responses. At the heart of this book is a bold new proposal to create a global pandemic playbook that can be quickly deployed when the next pandemic strikes. Countries and their experts must collaborate to create early warning systems, preparedness, prevention, responses and containment.

But who should pay the cost? Anne Kabagambe, a former Executive Board director for the World Bank Group, explores the options, and argues that to fail to learn from COVID-19 and neglect to create a global playbook now would cost far more when the next pandemic strikes.

Resetting Our Future: Zero Waste Living, The 80/20 Way

Many of us feel powerless to solve the looming climate and waste crises. We have too much on our plates, and may think these problems are better solved by governments and businesses. This book unlocks the potential in each "too busy" individual to be a crucial part of the solution. Stephanie Miller combines her career focused on climate change with her own research and personal experience to show how a few, relatively easy lifestyle changes can create significant positive impact. Using the simplicity of the 80/20 rule, she shows us those things (the 20%) that we can do to make the biggest (80%) difference in reversing the climate and waste crises.

The Bottom: A Theopoetic of the Streets

The Bottom: A Theopoetic of the Streets explores homelessness; fusing theology, jazz-verse and intimate storytelling into a challenging, raw and beautiful tale. As he journeys 'downward' to build real relationships with sisters and brothers living on the streets, the author invites the reader on that mysterious journey to meet those pushed to the margins, where we discover harsh truths about social injustice and dehumanization.

This novel in verse moves between poetry and a theological text titled “A Theology of the Bottom”, which is written by the book’s main character. Readers will be left with a greater understanding of the complex journeys of individuals who are navigating homelessness, as well as an increased understanding about liberation theology, and how to handle the grey areas of activism. The reader will also discover, as the author does, their truest self, and come to know more intimately the passionate love of God.
