This week we’re taking a closer look at our Cosmic Egg Books imprint. From Fantasy to Horror, via Sci-fi and a spot of Metaphysical Cosmology, Cosmic Egg Books gives readers the chance to escape the real world for a few hours.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of our latest releases…

Witch's listThe Witch’s List – Andrew Cairns

Sandy Beech has a healthy scepticism of all things paranormal. He doesn’t believe in magic, curses, spells or premonitions. But that scepticism is about to be put to the test. A series of unusual events – from a strange illness to a mysterious fire – is just the start. It’s when he visits his wife’s birthplace, the Ivory Coast, that things really start to get strange. There he hears about the Witch’s List – a list of people soon to die – and finds himself caught up in a dark world that could prove deadly.

‘For the remainder of the day, I just rested out in the courtyard. My head was throbbing and my eyes so swollen I could hardly see. Jacques and Frédérique dropped by to say hello but were a lot more subdued than usual. The atmosphere in the whole village was very morose after yesterday’s killing.

“The trial is this afternoon,” Jacques informed me.

“Shouldn’t you just take the killers to the police in Soubré?” I asked.

“That’s not how we do things round here,” he replied.

“Except in extreme circumstances,” said Frédérique.

How much more extreme did you need? I wondered if it was the other way round – a Burkinabé killing a local Bété – what would happen. A different story, no doubt. He would without question be sent off to the police, if he wasn’t lynched here first.

“Don’t worry, they’ll get a fair trial,” said Jacques, ever proud of the village facilities and way of doing things.

“Just as good as what they’d get in Soubré, before an official judge. Our village elders won’t be lenient.”

“Yeah, you never know, tonight we may be in for a hanging,” said Frédérique jokingly and motioned an imaginary rope round his neck being pulled up, while he closed his eyes and stuck out his tongue. This time, for once, no one laughed at his antics.’

I'm Zombie# I'm Zombie – Tony Newton

Piece together the story of how a virus sweeps the world, through the written evidence that people leave behind. Chatroom conversations, diary extracts, letters and poems reveal the hysteria, fear and lawlessness that spread as quickly as the virus itself. And when that virus turns people into zombies, it’s clear there are few places of safety left to turn.

‘If you could chose to know the day you were going to die, would you want to know? No, you would be living around that day, making choices around it. You would be invincible up until that day came. This is what this feels like as the world crumbles around me, around everyone. It’s just a matter of time before I/we die. The big question is, what will it be? A zombie biting me, and turning me into one of the raging dead, taking control of my body for it to be dragged around until it rots or gets battered to a pulp. Will I be attacked by these arsehole survivors, that look like they are from the film Mad Max? Will I die of thirst, hunger, get shot, stabbed or will I get to the point where I can’t take these feelings anymore: the shaking, the nerves, the worry takes over, will I choose to end it? The thing is, I don’t want to. I want to survive, and I want to see this world, albeit a new one.’

jhp560bb4b96f28aThe Mistletoe Haunting: Legend of Minster Lovell – David Slattery-Christy

A ghost story set across two time periods – modern day and the 1890s – The Mistletoe Haunting tells the story of a bride murdered on Christmas Eve. There’s plenty of suspense, twists and turns to keep you reading late into the night.

‘Suddenly I found myself back in the attic corridor. It surprised me because it was not my wish to be here. Usually I move wherever I like by thought alone, but some other force had brought me here to the attic. Ahead of me I could see a large wooden chest surrounded by debris and broken furniture. I walked cautiously towards it and as I did I found myself experiencing something I recognized as severe breathlessness. The lid suddenly moved and I stopped transfixed, as it seemed to tremble like someone was attempting to open it from the inside. The sound of the lid slamming shut, the lid of the trunk, time and time again ricocheted through my mind and reverberated through the manor. The echo of it vibrating the very walls and floors. Suddenly the lid burst open. I looked inside cautiously. Nothing was there apart from the remains of the rotted silk lining. I felt a scream rising, bursting to be free, but no sound emerged.’
