Photos and an important message from a novel launch party…

Paula CostonOn the 25th June 2014 Upstairs at Bar Titania, London, Paula Coston launched her new book

On the Far Side, There's a Boy. She took this as an opportunity to raise awareness of alternative lifestyle choices for women. Many women are not wives or mother, nor will they be, and it is important to celebrate the diversity of experience and the multitude of options available to women, whether or not they have children, or a partner. As Paula put it, “celebrating Otherhoods, not Motherhoods.”

Reflecting on this event, Paula wrote…”At 8.15 on the evening of the launch a goodly group of us set off from the bar with placards (for which many thanks to Simon Ffrench and Sarah Lunnon, who helped with materials and construction!). It was a sunshine-filled summer's evening in central London. It was terrifying for about ten seconds, then the sun bathed us, and we walked boldly down Charring Cross Road, circuited Leicester Square, ventured almost into Trafalgar Square and returned to the bar through the crowds and theatre/gallery queues of St Martin's Lane.”

Jonathan Ross and Paula CostonThe event featured a number of unusual women. Jody Day, founder of the online site for women without children, Gateway Women, and writer of a self-help book on the subject. Bodybuilder Dionne Dixon and Donna Maria de Lisser, who's also working towards a future competition. A chance encounter with Jonathan Ross led to some excellent publicity shots, too, as he was decidedly supportive.

While the placards were out, Paula and her team had opportunity to talk with a lot of passers by in the street.  It seemed that many 20 and 30-year-old women didn't realise that women's fertility drops steeply from the age of 32, and even more dramatically at 37. People didn't know, either, that  now, 1:5 women in the western world is childless (through choice or circumstance) after the menopause, and that this ratio is going up. Passers-by were genuinely fascinated. It’s an important social and cultural phenomenon that needs talking about.
